LCC music students perform in recital

Six Laredo Community College students enrolled in an applied music studio course of Music Instructor José D. Compeán performed recently in the LCC Student Recital.

The experience of performing before a live audience is a beneficial component of the applied music curriculum at LCC.  The recital represents the culmination of many hours of practice during the semester to sharpen the students’ skills.

The LCC Music and Dance Department hosted two music recitals to showcase a total of 18 talented music and voice students.

Compeán, who is celebrating his 31st year in music education, enjoys the energy and excitement of nurturing young talent, a passion which is closer than ever before to his heart.

“The Laredo community is fortunate to have great musical talent.  After 31 years, it is still a wonderful experience to work with such gifted music students.  Our LCC students are a credit to their parents, school and to the Laredo community,” explained Compeán.

LCC sparkles this holiday season with lights, Mexican
tradition

Laredo Community College students and community are invited to celebrate the holiday season with the lighting of the holiday lights on campus and a student presentation of a   centuries-old Mexican Christmas tradition on Wednesday, December 4.

Everyone is invited to share the joy of this holiday season during the holiday lighting ceremony which gets underway at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Yeary Library courtyard.

In conjunction with the celebration, the LCC student organization, La Pequeña Barraca Spanish Club, will present a Posada, a major Christmas celebration in Mexico which involves a procession reenacting Joseph and Mary’s journey to Bethlehem.

According to Mexican custom, the participants in the procession divide themselves into two groups, pilgrims and innkeepers.  The pilgrims travel from inn to inn asking for shelter and are refused at each until they finally reach a place where they are welcomed to stay.  There, the pilgrims rejoice and a party begins.  Food and drink are served and then children take turns to break open a piñata in the shape of a seven-point star.

For LCC student Mirna Alvarez, president of the Spanish club, the whole event will have a special meaning for her and the rest of the 54-member student organization.

Alvarez is very familiar with the custom which she celebrated as a child with her mother in Nuevo Laredo.  It is a tradition that her family has celebrated for many generations.

“La Pequeña Barraca is pleased to be able to present and preserve a tradition that we hold dear to our hearts,” said Alvarez.  “Personally, this is a tradition that my grandmother’s grandmother instilled in our family.  The members of the Spanish club are excited to educate students and the community about this special tradition which is part of our identity and our roots as Latinos.”

In keeping with the tradition, the posada will take place at the campus buildings which line the college’s main courtyard.  A party with traditional fare and a piñata will also be hosted for all to join.  The celebration will conclude with the debut presentation of a faculty-staff-student choir named the LCC Yuletide Singers.

For more information about the holiday celebration, contact the LCC Marketing and Public Information Office by calling 721-5140.
