Navajo Code Talkers speak at LCC Thursday

Two United States military veterans who played a crucial role in the ultimate victory of World War II will share their stories as Navajo Indian code talkers as part of the Laredo Community College Distinguished Speaker Series on Thursday, November 7.

The Distinguished Speakers program is part of events that the college is hosting to commemorate Veterans Day.  Other activities include the temporary installation of a U.S. flag in front of the Kazen College Center.  A ceremony to raise the flag will be held on November 7 at 7:50 a.m.  A ceremony to retire the flag will be held on Veterans Day (November 11) at 5 p.m.  Also, an exhibit focusing on Laredo veterans who served in the Korean War is on display at the LCC Yeary Library through November 15.  All events are open to students, faculty, staff and community.

Distinguished Speakers Merrill Sandoval and Dr. Roy Hawthorne will deliver two lectures on Thursday at LCC, including a morning presentation at 9:30 a.m. in the Adkins Building Arena Theater and an evening talk at 7 p.m. in the Kazen College Center.  Their presentation, entitled “Navajo Code Talkers: Secret Heroes of WW II,” is sponsored by the LCC Honors Program and Student Advisory Board.

Both men will recount how the Navajo language was used by the U.S. military as a code that Japanese code breakers could never decipher.  The Navajo language was a foreign and never-before-heard tongue.

Following the war, and for many decades beyond, the Navajo code talkers were prohibited from making their contributions known to the world because the language remained valuable as a security classified code

The first 29 code talkers who developed the initial code were first honored by   the   Pentagon   on  September  17,  1992,  in  Washington, D.C.   Countless veterans and historical groups have since honored them. On July 26, 2001, in the Capitol Rotunda, President George W. Bush bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal for the first twenty-nine code talkers. On November 24, 2001, the Navajo Nation held the Congressional Silver Medal Ceremony at the Fair Grounds in Window Rock, Arizona, for the other 390 Navajo Code Talkers, whose ongoing efforts to revise the code periodically helped preserve its unbreakability.

Unlike many of his Navajo colleagues, Hawthorne’s boyhood dreams and aspirations were to become a military warrior.  He was given that chance when he enlisted in 1943 and served in Pelilu, Guadalcanal, Okinawa, North China and Korea.  At the time of his discharge, he also served in the U.S. Army/Airborne.  Hawthorne went on to receive a Master of Theology and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.  He is a Baptist minister and works as president of the First American Baptist Ministries.

Sandoval grew up in a traditional Navajo setting, tending to sheep and not learning English until he entered school.  After enlisting in the Marine Corps in March 1943, Sandoval served in the Hawaiian Islands, Saipan, Iwo Jima and also in Japanese Proper.  He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Corporal.
