Aficionados of the piano were invited to spend an
evening with Laredo Community College Music Instructor Patricia Martellotti for
the presentation of her second community concert, Monday, October 28.
Last October, Martellotti dazzled a standing-room-only
audience with her first local concert performance.
A specialist in piano, composition and new music, she performed several
of her most recent works and compositions from the Masters.
In her October 28th concert, which began at 7 p.m. in
the Kazen College Center, Martellotti performed romantic and modern works by
Liszt, Heuser, J.S. Bach, and Copland, as well as a new, original composition,
entitled Oceans.
The concert finale featured Martellotti with special guest
pianist and former graduate classmate, Mikołaj Górecki, LCC’s newest
music instructor. The pianists
performed Górecki’s Toccata for Two Pianos.
“I am excited
to present this second concert to the community,” said Martellotti.
“Since relocating to Laredo, I have come to enjoy the community spirit
which is so abundant in this region and in the LCC campus.”
Born
in Orange County, Southern California, Martellotti began playing the piano at
age five. She won her first piano
competition in the California Junior Bach Festival in San Francisco at age ten
and later entered The Colburn School of Performing Arts in Central Los Angeles.
She has won numerous competitions including the Seventeen
Magazine/General Motor's National Piano Competition, Music
Teacher's Association
of California Concerto Competition, California State University
of Fullerton Piano Competition and Disney Creativity Challenge Award.
Martellotti has
soloed with major orchestras including the Eastman Wind Ensemble, Eastman School
Symphony, Saddleback Symphony, Brentwood-Westwood Symphony and the Orange County
Philharmonic.
Martellotti
completed her Bachelor of Music degree with a major in Piano Performance at
Eastman School of Music of The University of Rochester.
She completed her Master of Music degree with a major in Piano
Performance and Composition at Indiana University School of Music.
She is currently enrolled in the Graduate Music Program at the University
of Texas at San Antonio.
Górecki,
born in Katowice, Poland, began studying the violin at the age of six; a year
later he began studying the piano. In
1990, after graduating from the Secondary School of Music’s piano class, he
began to study composition at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice
under his father, composer Henryk Mikołaj Górecki.
Having graduated with honors from the Academy, Górecki was
granted a double scholarship by the Banff Center for the Arts in Canada, where
he stayed for a year honing his compositional technique.
In 1998, he began studying at the School of Music at the University of
Indiana, where he was awarded his doctoral degree in musical composition in May
2000.

The Laredo Community College Opera Workshop is offering an exciting way for
families to celebrate the Halloween season with the presentation of the
“Little Shop of Horrors,” October 31 through November 3.
Sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department and the City
of Laredo, the Opera Workshop fall production will be October 31 through
November 2 at 8 p.m. and on November 3 at 3 p.m. in the Adkins Building, Arena
Theater. Admission is free and open
to students and the public.
LCC Opera Workshop Co-Director Dr. Joseph Crabtree explained
that the musical is a modern telling of the Faust legend, which offers a
comical, poignant and revealing view of human nature.
It is musically styled after 1960’s Motown and set in
Mushnik’s Flower Shop at 1313 Skid Row.
“The show tells the story of Seymour, a nerd who discovers that
getting what you ask for can come with ‘messy, nasty strings,’” said Dr.
Crabtree. “He sells himself to a
plant named Audrey II to help win the heart of Audrey. After giving the plant its first drop of blood from a thorn
prick, Seymour discovers what greed, desire and love can do to a nice guy.”
As Seymour’s success grows, so do the problems, and he
discovers that there are no “free lunches,” added Dr. Crabtree.
The musical’s Co-Director Dana Crabtree explained how LCC
opera workshop students have put major effort into the show and have grown
tremendously.
“When we began rehearsals, we had a lot of young talent.
But, it is nice to see how the show has caused each student to grow.
We decided to open on Halloween because it fits the season perfectly.
Besides the horror, there are a lot of laughs, tears, thoughts and
lessons in the show, coupled with music that is well adapted and tuneful,”
said Ms. Crabtree.
The role of Seymour will be played by Mark Mackey on
Oct. 31 and November 2, and Andrew Miller on November 1 and 3.
The musical also features Lesley Martinez as Audrey.
Some of the smaller roles include Mushnik, the greedy shop
owner (Victor Rosales), Orin Scrivello, DDS, the bad-boy dentist/boyfriend of
Audrey (Javier Aguilar), and four entrepreneurs who want in on the action,
delightfully played by Juan Luis Perez, Jr.
The action is explained by a trio of girls which acts as a Greek Chorus (Aidee
Juarez, Ariana Farias, and Arlene Holzapfelbaum.).
Customers and denizens of Skid Row include Michelle Perez,
Luz Barrera, and Kim Keller (who is also a puppeteer).
The Voice of Audrey II (Javier Valenciano) is masterfully puppeteered by
Jose Barrientos, Jr.
Vocal arrangements are by Robert Billig, orchestration by
Robby Merkin, puppet designs by Martin P. Robinson. Audrey II puppets created by Zachary Scott Theatre Center in
Austin, Texas.
Little Shop of Horrors is presented through
special arrangement with and all authorized performance materials are supplied
by Music Theatre International, 421 West 54th Street, New York, NY 10019, Tel.:
(212) 541-4684, Fax:(212) 397-4684, www.MTIShows.com.

A Mail Art Show which opened on October 23 at Laredo Community College is drawing worldwide interest from artists as far away as Australia.
The LCC Art Gallery has received over 150 entries from all parts of the United States and abroad for the city’s first International Mail Art Show. The exhibition will be on display at the LCC Art Department Teaching Gallery from October 23 to November 13. Gallery hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m.
A reception will be held on the final day of the exhibit, November 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the LCC Art Department Teaching Gallery. At the close of the exhibit, guests will be able to walk away with a piece of artwork.
The theme for the mail art show is “Rivers and Bridges” and is open to all interpretations.
LCC Art Instructor Eva Soliz says that the college has received all forms of art, including photographs, mixed media, drawings and paintings.
“We even received a soap bar with a stamp and mailing address on one side and the carving of a bridge on the other side. The exhibit will offer an eclectic view of art created by artists of all skills,” says Soliz.
LCC Art Instructor Gary Brown explained that all forms of media, in any size, were accepted. However, the art piece must have been mailed through the postal system.
“The Laredo Community College Art Department is pleased to introduce a fun and exciting concept in art shows in the Laredo region. The idea of the mail art show is pretty popular in art circles across the world. And the LCC Art Department thought that the theme of rivers and bridges would tie in appropriately to our community,” said Brown.
He added that the college promoted the Mail Art Show in national art publications and has received entries from all parts of Texas, Florida, California, New York, Ohio, Australia, Oregon, Utah, and Boston and other cities. Inquiries about the exhibit have also come in from Europe and Japan. The exhibit organizers noted that they expect to continue receiving art work leading to the closing of the exhibit.
Entries can be mailed to: Rivers and Bridges, Art Department, Laredo Community College, West End Washington Street, Laredo, TX 78040 USA.

The Laredo Community College Yeary Library, in association with the Daughters of the American Revolution, hosted a reception for an exhibit honoring Laredoans who fought in the Korean War, as part of nationwide observances marking the 50th Anniversary of this conflict (1950-53). The event was on Thursday, October 24, at 10 a.m. in the library foyer.
LCC Reference Librarian Bill Wisner said, “The exhibit has drawn much interest already, not only from those old enough to remember the war, but also from students of a new generation who may know little about this historic and complicated conflict.”
The show features maps, photos of Laredo veterans in battle, a wealth of medals, a Rosary, a signed letter from President Truman to one of the soldiers, and other memorabilia that make history come alive.
Accompanying the display is a 14-minute video professionally produced by Time Warner Communications focusing on various battles and Laredoans’ involvement in them—a moving document narrated by Laredo native. David C. Leyendecker.
Leyendecker, a Marine veteran of the Korean War, also presented a lunch talk at the LCC Library, room 146 on Monday, October 28, where he described his experiences in the war and took questions about the conflict. Organizers said that the presentation was well attended by students, military veterans and community members.
“Of all American wars, the Korean conflict may be one that people know the least about-and anyone who attended Mr. Leyendecker’s talk no doubt found what he had to say very interesting, because he was actually there,” said Wisner.
The exhibit will remain on display through November 15. Admission to the exhibit is free and open to students and the public.

Laredo Community College nursing students will benefit from a new scholarship established by Mercy Health Center in honor of recently retired Sister Mary Adele Fuchs, RSM.
Mercy officials named the scholarship after Sister Adele who retired two years ago after dedicating a lifetime of service to Laredo through Mercy Hospital and as a religious Sister of Mercy.
During her years as healthcare professional and administrator at Mercy, Sister Adele touched the lives of countless persons. Her work will continue through the careers of students in the LCC Nursing Department, said Javier Iruegas, CEO and President of Mercy Health Center.
“Sister Adele was instrumental in developing this scholarship for the benefit of Laredo Community College nursing students,” said Iruegas. “Upon her retirement, she was wholeheartedly behind the effort to move this scholarship forward. Mercy Health Center is pleased to know that her legacy of service will continue with the establishment of this scholarship.”
Sabás Zapata, III, Director of Planning and Marketing at Mercy and a member of the LCC Board of Trustees, remarked how Mercy Health Center is committed to alleviating the nursing shortage in Laredo.
“This new scholarship will hopefully motivate and encourage more Laredo residents to enter the nursing field to grow our own corps of healthcare professionals,” said Zapata.
LCC President Ramon H. Dovalina lauded the efforts of Mercy Health Center and its decision to name the scholarship after Sister Adele.
“Laredo Community College counts on partners such as Mercy Health Center to help students get the quality education they need to pursue a health care education and fill a tremendous need for licensed nurses in our community. It is appropriately fitting that the scholarship celebrates the lifetime career accomplishments of a caring individual who greatly impacted the well being of our community,” said Dovalina.
The Mercy Health Center-Sister Mary Adele Fuchs, RSM, Nursing Scholarship will consist of a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded every December to a nursing student for the spring semester.
Applicants must reside in Webb, Jim Hogg or Zapata Counties and be accepted by LCC to study in either the Vocational Nursing (VN) or Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) programs. The recipient must also agree to practice nursing in the tri-county area for at least two years following graduation.
To apply for the scholarship, the applicant must submit an application, copy of high school transcript (and where applicable, post high school transcripts), and a one-page essay on why nursing is the applicant’s chosen course of study. The application materials must be submitted to the Mercy Health Center Planning and Marketing Department, P.O. Box 2068, Laredo, TX 78044-2068. Applications are due by November 30 to be considered for the Spring 2003 semester.
A committee from Mercy Health Center will select the recipient based on the content requested on the application, the essay and academics.
Applications for the nursing scholarship are available at the offices of the LCC VN and ADN Departments in Lopez Nursing Building, rooms 104 and 126. For more information, call 721-5255 or 721-5252.

8. LCC calendar for October 14-19, 2002
The chief executive officers of Laredo’s educational institutions convened on the Laredo Community College campus October 8 to formulate collaborative endeavors to improve the quality of life in the community.
The meeting of the Laredo Educational Systems Coalition, hosted by LCC President Ramon H. Dovalina, includes members Jerry Barber, Interim Superintendent of Laredo Independent School District; Ramon Dovalina, President of Laredo Community College; Ray Keck, President of Texas A&M International University; David J.P. Marzak, Superintendent of Schools of the Diocese of Laredo; and Oscar Rodriguez, Superintendent of United Independent School District.
Others present at the meeting were Richard Armenta, University/Community College Liaison for the Texas Association of Community Colleges; Juan Maldonado, Vice-President for Instruction and Student Development at LCC; and Minita Ramirez, Executive Director of the Office of Enrollment Management and School Relations at TAMIU.
Dovalina initiated the meeting by seeking input from members on the Coalition’s compact, a written overview of the Coalition, which lists its purpose and goals. The mission of the Coalition is to bring Laredo’s educational institutions together to work on common goals to improve access to education for all residents and enhance the quality of life in the community.
Keck distributed written suggestions of actual projects that the group might consider implementing.
Armenta suggested that the compact be seen as the framework for mutual cooperation and that Keck’s written suggestions be considered in a separate category within the document as ideas for action. All members concurred.
Discussion continued on seeking avenues to improve student performance on PSAT and SAT scores, curriculum alignment and more teacher recruitment.
Rodriguez, Barber and Marzak agreed on the importance of “training or growing our own” corps of teachers. Rodriguez offered to share a model project intended to identify high school students as prospective teachers.
In the area of curriculum alignment, Ramirez and Maldonado shared results of a nine-month initiative conducted with the assistance of William Reaves and Mel Griffin of the Texas A&M University System, Institute of School-University Partnerships. Faculty members from various disciplines have worked together to articulate coursework skill requirements that predicate success from one course to the other. A progress report is expected to be issued in November.
The superintendents lauded the collaborative efforts of the college and university, noting the positive impact the mutual cooperation is having on students.
Coalition members also discussed the need for data on student performance and preparation. They also explored ideas to share staff development training opportunities to defray costs.
For more information about the Laredo Educational Systems Coalition, contact President Dovalina by calling 721-5101.

Laredo Community College will offer a unique opportunity for area children, college students and community to explore the science of space for the future of Earth during NASA Days at LCC, October 21-22.
Dr. Nora Garza, Dean of Arts and Sciences, says that the college is proud and honored to host for the first time in Laredo this valuable educational exhibit for the benefit of students and the public. She was instrumental in working with NASA’s Johnson Space Center officials to bring the semitrailer exhibit to the city.
“Laredo Community College is excited to bring such an important learning experience to our community, considering that not many Laredo students have the opportunity to visit our national space center in Houston,” said Garza.
Accommodations will be provided for school groups to visit the exhibit from 9 a.m. to 12 noon or 1 to 4 p.m. during the exhibit’s two day stay in Laredo. Area teachers who are interested in providing this unique learning experience to their classes are encouraged to complete a registration form by calling Dr. Garza at 721-5823. Reservations are on a first-come, first serve basis. Approximately 30 students can view the exhibit at one time. Tours will be scheduled every 30 minutes.
The Benefits of Space on Tour exhibit will be open to the general public from 4 to 6 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
The semitrailer exhibit will be stationed on the west side of the college campus near the Laredo Children’s Museum.
The LCC Mathematics Department will offer a professional development lecture for area master teachers in conjunction with NASA Days at LCC.
LCC Math Instructor Hanan Amro will lead a lecture on “NASA Applications in the Mathematics Classroom” on Monday, October 21, at 4:30 p.m. in the de la Garza Building, room 101. She will present a wealth of information to access classroom activities provided by NASA’s Aerospace Academy. The lecture is free of charge to all educators. To RSVP for the event, please call 721-5441.
NASA’s traveling exhibit provides citizens with a closer look at the benefits they receive from the U.S. space program. Technology derived from the space program touches many lives every day. Examples include the common home smoke detectors and cordless tools. More recent technologies coming into wider use include a miniature, implantable heart assist device based on space shuttle fuel pumps and protective clothing for a variety of applications based on spacesuit technology.
“The Benefits of Space on Tour exhibit clearly depicts the many ways in which technologies derived from the U.S. space program impact everyone’s daily life. It identifies tremendous potential for even greater future benefits to the public from the ongoing exploration of space,” said Charlene Gilbert, Johnson Space Center’s director of technology transfer and commercialization.
The first section, dubbed as the Technology Hall of Fame, features audio and video exhibits on a dozen space program spin-offs. After viewing the exhibits, visitors enter a surround-sound theater to view a 10-minute video on the past, present and future of the space program.

Week of October 7, 2002
1. Eleanor Roosevelt Walk Saturday at LCC
2. LCC presents relationship speaker Ellen Gootblatt
3. LCC accepting entries from student composers
4. LCC students to educate youth on proper backpack use
5. Nosotros Net continues to advance lives
6. LCC Calendar for October 7-12
Laredo Community College was the site of the first community-wide Eleanor Roosevelt Fund Walk/Run/Bike event on October 12. The event commemorated Eleanor Roosevelt’s birthday, raised awareness about educational equity, and raised funds for scholarships, said local organizers.
“We’re walking the walk and talking the talk,” said LCC President Ramon H. Dovalina. The college is the first institutional member of the American Association of University Women in the country to host an Eleanor Roosevelt Fund walking event in association with the Laredo Branch of AAUW.
The event was scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon beginning at the LCC Bus Shelter on the east side of campus. Donations of $1 and up were being gathered by AAUW Laredo Branch members and all walkers, runners and bikers were welcomed. T-shirts were distributed to contributors of $25 or more.
Walkers were also “talking the talk” by reading quotes from the writings of the former first lady who has become a symbol of gender equity and educational access throughout America.
“The Eleanor Roosevelt Fund was established by the AAUW Foundation in 1988 to support groundbreaking research on the educational experiences of women and girls,” says Dr. Nora Garza, former state president of AAUW and this year’s co-president of the Laredo Branch.
“In Laredo, we are doing ground-breaking work too, we are working with a group of middle school girls, encouraging them as junior members of our branch, in order to give them the support they need to seek their individual and unlimited potential,” Garza said.
A portion of the funds raised will be directed to the national ER Fund, and a portion will be used to support the Laredo AAUW scholarship fund. All contributions are welcome.
Registration packets were available from Dr. Garza or event co-chairs Rebecca Sepulveda and Dr. Sara Carrasco at Laredo Community College. For more information call 721-5140. All walkers, runners, and bicycle riders were welcomed to participate.
Each year, the Laredo Branch of AAUW hosts a series of events designed to promote educational opportunities for women and girls. These include a “Transitions” Conference in November for persons interested in returning to education, the annual “Girls Can” conference in February, Women’s History Month observance in March and a Sister-to-Sister Conference in April. Co-presidents of the Laredo branch this year are Garza, Dean of Arts and Sciences at Laredo Community College; and Veronica Martinez, Director of Institutional Effectiveness at Texas A&M International University.
The local AAUW organization is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and encourages membership from full and associate members. Associate members are persons who are enrolled in at least one college course and are working on their bachelor's degree. AAUW is open to all persons with a bachelor's degree or higher and who are committed to the ideals and mission of AAUW. These are promoting access and equity in education for all women and girls, lifelong learning, and positive societal change.

Laredo Community College students with a penchant for composing music are invited to submit their original works for possible inclusion in LCC’s Fall 2002 New Music Concert.
Sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department, this year’s New Music Concert is intended to give more students the opportunity to showcase and perform their original musical piece before a live audience, says Patricia Martellotti, who teaches music and composition courses at LCC.
“In past years, the concert has been limited to featuring the works of students in the music composition class. However, this time, the LCC Music and Dance Department decided to extend a campus-wide call for entries to all LCC students,” says Martellotti.
To be considered for the New Music concert, students should complete an application available at the LCC Music and Dance Building II, room 105. Applications with the musical composition submissions must be tendered to the Music and Dance Department by October 25.
The New Music Concert is scheduled for November 8 at 7 p.m. in the LCC Music and Dance Building I, room 107.

A group of Laredo Community College students are using creativity, humor and a bit of acting to educate youth on the detrimental effects student backpacks can have when used improperly.
Students in the LCC Occupational Therapy Assistant program and members of the Student Occupational Therapy Assistant (SOTA) Club will deliver a skit on proper backpack usage to youngsters who attend the city-operated Farias Recreational Center, 1601 Farias Street. The live drama presentation will be held on Wednesday, October 9 at 4 p.m.
SOTA Historian Ana Ortiz explained that the idea to develop the skit was proposed by the OTA students in an effort to spread an important message on the physical well being of their younger counterparts.
“The Occupational Therapy Assistant students want to inform and create awareness on what can happen if students carry heavy backpack on their backs,” says Ortiz. “We have already started to spread this message in class presentations at several elementary schools.”
For more information, contact OTA Instructor Terri Gonzalez by calling 721-5460 or 721-5261.

The Nosotros Net Services Initiative, a state-funded project led by Laredo Community College and its partners within the South Texas Community Network, on Friday announced a new advancement in its technology and education services to the community.
Leaders from the City of Laredo and LCC announced the next step of the project, the establishment of Internet connectivity at two city-operated recreation centers. The announcement was made at one of the two sites—K. Tarver Recreational Center, 2902 Tilden Street. The Cigarroa Recreational Center at 2201 Zacatecas Street has also been wired with Internet access.
The Internet connectivity represents a significant advancement for the project which is the region’s first collaborative communications network. The network intends to use technology to provide residents of Laredo and Webb County with local and worldwide access to education and information resources.
The first step in the project allowed the South Texas Community Network to set-up computer stations at five city recreational centers. The computer stations are currently being used by the program to deliver free computer training to adults.
Project leaders are placing computer stations with Internet access in ten economically distressed sectors of the region. The next step is to fully launch a community website---www.nosotrosnet.net—with information and resources which will help area residents advance their lives.
The project will grow further with the launch of classes for adults wanting to prepare for the GED exam or those wanting to learn English as a second language (ESL). An on-line community resource directory will also help residents find family support services.
“Laredo Community College is proud to be working with our partners to help enhance the quality of life in our region through the use of technology,” said LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina. “Too many people in our community are still afraid of computers and don’t know that technology can be used to access education as well as useful tools for every day life,” he said.
Members of the South Texas Community Network include the County of Webb, the City of Laredo, Mercy Health Center, the South Texas Workforce Development Board, Laredo Independent School District, United Independent School District and Laredo Community College.
The
South Texas Community Network project began in 2001 with a $500,000 grant from
the Texas Infrastructure Fund (TIF) Board. The network earmarked $50,000 in
matching funds for the project.
TIF
is dedicated to connecting the people of Texas through the implementation of a
viable and sustainable telecommunications infrastructure for schools, libraries,
public and non-profit health care facilities, and higher education institutions.
Adults who are interested in learning more about the educational opportunities available through the Nosotros Net Services Initiative are encouraged to call 721-5425 or 721-5102.
