Laredo Community College is offering the opportunity for adults to learn a new and rewarding career in four months through the Nursing Assistant Certificate program.
This week, LCC launches an
opportunity for persons to enter the Nursing Assistant Program in the Spring
2003 semester which begins in January.
Applications for admission to the program are
available in the LCC Lopez Nursing Building, room 104, Mondays through Fridays
from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Prospective
students must file their application by November 15 to be considered for
admission to the nursing program. The student applicant must have a high school or
GED diploma, and a reading level of 10.5 or higher.
The LCC Nursing Assistant Program is a 15 college credit hour certificate program which trains students from various cultural and academic backgrounds to become nursing assistants in community agencies such as nursing homes, hospitals, physician's offices, health departments and/or public school systems.
Instruction focuses on technical vocabulary development, communication skills, clerical practices, computation methods and basic sanitation and nursing procedures. Students participate in lectures, group discussions and clinical lab practices on campus and in a hospital setting. Students who complete the program are required to take the Texas Department of Human Services Certification examination in order to practice in the state.
While some graduates choose to gain immediate employment at nursing homes and hospitals, others opt to advance their education by continuing in the nursing or allied health education programs available at LCC.
Cost of the nursing program at LCC, including pre-requisites, tuition, books and supplies is about $1,100.
“This is a significantly affordable learning experience when you consider that other schools with training programs are one-third costlier than the LCC program,” says Department Division Leader Virginia Goldsmith.
Established in 1995, the LCC Nursing Assistant program is a model program that has always maintained high passing rates on the certification exam. Certification is highly valued by the health care industry because it is a requirement for the nursing assistant working with Medicare skilled clients.

Assistant program by calling 721-5255.
In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Laredo Community College and the American Cancer Society are joining forces to inform students and the community about the importance of early detection and other issues to help save lives.
LCC will host a breast cancer awareness lecture on Wednesday, October 2, at 12 noon in the de la Garza Building, room 101. Admission is free and open to the campus body and general public.
Elizabeth Kurzyn-Valle will deliver her presentation on “The Effectiveness of Early Detection,” including new facts and figures about breast cancer and an overview of early detection techniques to use in the fight against breast cancer. Literature and information related to the topic will be available free of charge after the presentation.
An estimated 40,000 deaths—39,500 women and 400 men—are anticipated from breast cancer in 2002, according to statistics from the American Cancer Society.
As alarming as the fact may seem, mortality rates declined significantly during 1992-98, with the largest decreases in younger women, according to the most recent data. The decreases are attributed to both earlier detection and improved treatment.
Valle currently serves as staff development coordinator for Mercy Health Center’s Education Department. She is a registered nurse, volunteer for the American Cancer Society and member of the Oncology Nursing Society.
Valle holds Master of Science in Healthcare Services Administration from the College of St. Francis-Louisiana campus. A 1978 alumna of LCC, Valle also holds an Associate Degree in Nursing from Laredo’s college.
For
more information about the lecture, contact Wellness Program Coordinator Lu
Sparkman by calling 721-5328.
Graduates and former students of Laredo Community College are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the LCC Alumni Association on Wednesday, October 2, at 6 p.m. in the Kazen College Center, room 121.

Billed as a “Meet with Treats,” this year’s event will be held on Halloween night, October 31, and will include a short meeting and election of officers for the 2002-2003 year. Complimentary botanas and beverages will be available during the social.
“The LCC Alumni Association encourages all graduates and former students of Laredo Community College and Laredo Junior College to renew friendships and work together toward the advancement of Laredo’s college and its students,” says Association President Jaime Martinez.
Membership is open to all graduates of LCC/LJC and former students who attended the college for at least one semester.

“The first section of the Culinary Arts class will focus on proper procedures of sanitation, proper knife procedures, sauces, soups, salad dressings, and other basics. The LCC Art Gallery is currently accepting artist’s submissions through October 16 for consideration to be exhibited in the city’s first International Mail Art Show. The exhibition will be on display at the LCC Art Teaching Gallery from October 23 to November 13.

He added that the college has promoted the Mail Art Show in national art publications and has received entries from Florida, California and other cities. Inquiries have also come in from Europe and Australia.

Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina, President of Laredo Community College, has been named by Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Rylander to co-chair a statewide task force with the goal of making higher education more accessible to all Texas high school graduates.
Dovalina co-chairs the TexasNextStep Task Force with Dr. Adena Williams Loston, President of Houston’s San Jacinto College South. The task force is composed of 14 business and education leaders from throughout the state, including the chancellors and presidents of the state’s largest community college and technical college districts.
“I have known Comptroller Rylander to be an undeterred champion for education and am happy to serve on this task force which will provide input to the Comptroller and the Texas Legislature about the needs of our college-bound students,” Dovalina said.
Rylander, a former schoolteacher, a former school board president, and former colleague of Dovalina from her days as co-founder of Austin Community College, announced the TexasNextStep proposal last May. The program complements the existing TEXAS Grant by providing two years of college free at any public community college, technical or two-year institution in the state.
Her goal is for Texas “to have the most educated workforce in the nation” by assuring that all the state’s high school students have access to college.
The proposal provides every Texas high school graduate with up to 60 semester credit hours (plus remediation if needed) at any public, community, technical or lower-division institution in the state. Comptroller Rylander has found $250 million in ongoing annual cost-savings and additional revenue—with no tax increase—to more than pay for the program, which would cost an estimated $150 million when fully implemented. Rylander proposes using a small portion of Texas Lottery revenues to pay for the tuition, books and fees of every student who enrolls in college within 16 months of high school graduation.
In many cases, the proposal will save students and the state money by encouraging students to study at colleges close to home. Room and board often increases the cost of college attendance. TexasNextStep also gives students the option to enter the workforce directly after their first two years, or to continue their education by transferring to a senior-level college or university.
The comptroller’s office says research consistently shows that community colleges can be an excellent stepping stone to a four-year university. In national studies, those who receive an associate’s degree at a community college and transfer to a university have a 70 percent completion rate, which is often higher than for entering freshmen who start out at a university.
“The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that by 2030, 60 percent of Texans will have only a high school diploma or less,” Rylander says. “TexasNextStep will prove them wrong. The key to Texas’ economic future is a better educated workforce.”
For more information about the TexasNextStep proposal, contact the Texas Comptroller’s Office by calling 512/463-4070 or Dovalina at 721-5101.

Gardens
are focus of LCC photo exhibit
The
Laredo Community College Art Department unveiled on Thursday, September 12, a
pictorial collage of gardens photographed by Steve Goff, a college educator,
professional photographer and avid gardener.
The college hosted an opening reception for students and community to meet the artist and his exhibit, entitled “From Someone’s Garden.” The reception was held in the LCC Art Teaching Gallery.
The
artist also offered a student lecture on infrared photography on Thursday in the
LCC Art Building (P-25).
The
exhibition consists of 39 matted color photographs ranging in sizes from 40x55
to 16x20. The central theme of
Goff’s exhibition is gardens from around the state and nation.
“I
am a gardener—pure and simple. Almost
everything about my garden delights me, and that is why I am so intrigued with
this body of work that I have explored for the last seven years by photographing
gardens in Texas and around the country,” says Goff, who has been the Chair of
Photography at Odessa College since 1996. He
has taught at Odessa since 1984.
He
adds, “I am striving to convey to others my experience of the garden that is
rich with a luminous light, an earthy smell, a vast range of delicate sounds,
and an absolute sense of serenity. The
soft dreamy mood in these images invites the viewer to drift with me into
serene, spiritual places surrounded by the magic and beauty of nature.”
To
capture his work on film, Goff says he used a simple camera, called the Diana.
It is an all-plastic camera often referred to as a toy camera, which was
manufactured in
China during the 1960s. He
began using the camera in 1971
“The
reasons why I still use and love this camera are similar to those from the early
70s. As beginning students in
photography, we were asked not be encumbered with the medium’s technical
aspects, but to be free with our spirit and to enjoy the spontaneity of this
camera,” says Goff.
He
notes that he still enjoys that freedom that the camera offers.
“It
is an unassuming tool that only needs bright sunlight and a lot of black
electrical tape wrapped around its edges to keep the light leaks off the film.
The Diana has truly taught me to trust my intuition and to respond
visually through my heart to what is in front of me.”
A
native of Springfield, Ohio, Goff holds Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Fine
Arts degrees from Ohio University in Athens.
In
addition to teaching at Odessa, Goff has taught at the University of
Texas-Permian Basin, Lakeland Community College in Cleveland, Cleveland State
University and Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland.
He
has conducted numerous workshops in Ohio and Texas and has received fellowships
from the Mid-American Arts Alliance/National Endowment for the Arts and the Ohio
Arts Council.
Goff’s
work has been exhibited around the nation and abroad, including Texas,
Washington, Illinois, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Michigan, New Mexico,
Ohio, California, Virginia, Maine, New York, France and the Soviet Union.
Goff’s exhibit will remain on display at LCC through October 10. For gallery hours or more information, contact the LCC Art Department by calling 721-5224.

Most people think linoleum is for kitchen floors, but a group of art students at Laredo Community College, have used the material to create a unique form of art.
On Wednesday, the LCC Yeary Library will unveil a new art exhibition consisting of linoleum cut prints created this summer by students of Art Instructor Gary Brown.
Brown says the art was made by students with varying skill levels, from first-year non-art majors to second-year art majors. It consists of about 18 art pieces, ranging from black and white to 3-color artwork.
He says that the linoleum material used is a softer variety than the one traditionally used for floor covering.
“It has a burlap backing and students use special tools to carve the designs before applying painting and a high-pressure pressing through a printmaker,” says Brown. “The exhibit features an interesting combination of art work, including images of fish, patriotic themes and alien space ships.”
Brown acknowledged that printmaking is not a commonly recognized art form as are painting, drawing, or photography. He hopes that students and the public take the opportunity to view the exhibit and learn to appreciate its beauty.
Brown, who holds a Master’s degree in printmaking, explained how there are four categories to printmaking. This includes relief, which basically involves wood- and linoleum cutting; intaglio, which deals with etching; and lithography and screen printmaking.
“The LCC Art Department has one instructor, Linda Waugaman, who teaches the lithography classes, which are very popular with our students. The class I teach normally deals with relief, which is basically the beginning phase to printmaking. I hope that the exhibit at the library will encourage other prospective students to enroll in our future printmaking classes to be offered next semester.”
The exhibit may be viewed at the LCC Yeary Library during its normal operating schedule: Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m., through September 13.
