LCC and partners plan Money for College event

Explore the opportunities that are available to obtain and finance a higher education at the first community-wide Money for College: A Financial Aid and College Fair on Saturday, May 3.

The event—sponsored by the Central/South Texas ENLACE Partnership, led locally by Laredo Community College—will be from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Wal-Mart store, located at 5610 San Bernardo.  Admission to the fair is free of charge and open to high school and college students, their parents and adults.

In addition to LCC, other institutions that will participate in the fair will be International Bank of Commerce, Laredo Independent School District, and the Texas Workforce Center-Workforce Investment Act (Adult Program).

Information on college programs, federal financial assistance, scholarships, loans and other ways to get money for college will be available.

Assistance will also be available on how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

The national ENLACE program, which stands for Engaging the Latino Community in Education, designated 13 communities in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, New Mexico, New York and Texas as recipients of $28 million in grant money to fund initiatives aimed at retaining and graduating Hispanic students from high school, as well as increasing the number of students going to and graduating from a four-year college or university.

ENLACE is derived from the Spanish word enlazar, which means to link or to weave together. The three key components of ENLACE are a common vision of a brighter future for Latino youth, collaborative work in coalitions and a focus on strengthening public school-university-community partnerships.

In Texas, Southwest Texas State University leads the initiative; locally, C-STEP is at LCC. For more information, contact C-STEP Promotora Sandra Rodriguez at LCC by calling 721-5218 or by e-mail at srodriguez@laredo.edu.

Math TASP workshops at LCC, April 22-24

The Laredo Community College Mathematics Department will offer again a valuable opportunity for students to prepare for the math section of the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) Test through a series of workshops on April 22, 23 and 24.

The workshops will be led by long-time LCC Math Instructor Dr. Alejandro Perez from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in Laird Hall, room 277.

LCC Culturas Concert promotes dance cultures

From the rhythmic beats of Spanish gypsy music to the traditional worship dances of the Mayan Gods, Laredo Community College will present a culturally eclectic showcase of music and dance during its annual LCC Culturas concert on Friday, April 25.

Sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department in association with the City of Laredo, the cultural extravaganza will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Laredo Civic Center Auditorium.  Admission is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature captivating performances by the LCC Ballet Folklorico and the LCC Flamenco Dance Troupe.  Guest artists will include singer Carol Garcia, the LCC Mariachi Palomino and floreador Rodolfo Morales.

Under the direction of LCC adjunct instructor Perla Diaz-Garcia, the Ballet Folklorico will perform Noche de los Dioses Mayas which Garcia describes as a “spectacular production that highlights a little bit of history on the Mayan culture and tradition.  Manuel Flores is providing special assistance with the choreography of several dance performances.

In Flor de Piña, the Ballet Folklorico will present a typical dance from Tuxtepec, a colorful region by the Papaloapan river.

“The main agricultural product of this region is the pineapple,” said Garcia.  “When the crops are bountiful, the women celebrate by expressing their happiness with a traditional dance.”

The folklorico dancers will also highlight dances from the states of Veracruz and Chiapas with their performance of Estampas de Mexico, which includes the dances Morena, Cascabel and Alcaraban.

The ballet folklorico’s final performance will include live music performed  by  LCC’s Mariachi Palomino.  The group is directed by LCC Music Instructor Ruben Vargas.  The selection, Que lindo es Jalisco, will also feature floreador Morales, who as part of tradition assists with the handling of a rope throughout the dance.

“Jalisco is the state known for its mariachis, charros and chinas.  Its folklore captures the soul of Mexico through its lively music, colorful costumes and refined dances.  The LCC Ballet Folklorico will dance El Pasacalle, Alazonas, La negra, and the traditional Jarabe tapatio,” noted Garcia.

The LCC Flamenco Dance Troupe is under the direction of LCC adjunct instructor Alicia McKinnis.  Samuel Montezco and Alma de Leon are providing special assistance with the choreography in some pieces.

The group will begin with their performance of Origenes del flamenco-Sensualidad y fuego-zambra.

“Flamenco is the evolved song, dance and music of the Spanish gypsy and the melting pot of cultures that make up Andalucia in southern Spain.  It originated from a balanced mix of Eastern and Western cultures, and is uniquely cross-cultural in both a visual and an auditory sense,” said McKinnis.

In España- Arte, Aire y Gracia, the LCC flamenco dancers will highlight the medium’s personality, charm, flavor and dynamics to experience the “total feeling” of this Spanish dance, added McKinnis.

The dancers will also perform the paso doble, La passion del Flamenco Español, which showcases the flamenco dancer’s whole body as an instrument that visually and audibly expresses the serious art form of flamenco.

The LCC Flamenco Dance Troupe will then perform the rumba, Gitanos-Cruzando el Rio.  McKinnis explained the meaning behind this dance.

“Around the late 15th century, gypsies began to appear in wandering tribes around southern Spain.  For reasons long ago lost, the gypsies left their Eastern homeland for another freedom.  This is their way of life.  They demand a freedom within nature, a right to be left alone, to be able to go wherever their inner voices direct them to go,” said McKinnis.

Other performances by the flamenco troupe include the sensual flamenco dance, Garrotin-Garbo y Salero, the explosive Farruca- Casta y Coraje, and the contemporary flamenco piece, Flamenco Nuevo Español-Bulerias, Tango y Espiritu hispano.

For more information about the LCC Culturas concert, contact the LCC Music and Dance Department by calling 721-5330.

Join the LCC Music and Dance Department for the presentation of the LCC Culturas Concert on Friday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Laredo Civic Center Auditorium.  Admission is free of charge.

LCC health career program offers new benefit

Laredo Community College students and faculty in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program have reason to celebrate and tout the benefits of this health profession during the observance of April’s Occupational Therapy Month.

Through a new partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and its Laredo Campus Extension, graduates of the LCC OTA program can now transition into a Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program without leaving home.

Occupational therapy involves rehabilitative treatment for people of all ages who, because of physical, developmental, social or emotional problems, need specialized assistance to lead independent, productive and satisfying lives.

These healthcare professionals also provide skilled treatment to persons with substance abuse problems or eating disorders, people with burns, spinal cord injuries or amputations and persons with broken bones or other injuries resulting from falls or accidents.

In the spring of 1997, LCC addressed the region’s growing need for these healthcare workers by launching the OTA program.  The two-year allied health career training program leads toward an Associate in Applied Science Degree upon completing the degree requirements.

The LCC OTA program has experienced tremendous success and growth since its inception.  Today, the new partnership between LCC and the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio is offering a degree advancement option for graduates of the LCC program.

The OTA to MOT (Master of Occupational Therapy) bridge program is a part-time option for occupational therapy assistants who wish to earn an entry-level MOT degree.

OTA graduates from LCC, who complete their degree requirements with a 3.0 grade point average or better, can continue their studies toward the Master’s degree at the new Laredo campus extension of the UTHSC-SA.

“Through this unique partnership, all LCC courses that the OTA graduate completes at the college can transfer to the university,” said Terri Gonzalez, OTA Instructor at LCC and the liaison coordinator of this initiative.

Due to the part-time nature of the program, students can continue working while completing coursework.

For Ramoncita Montemayor, a graduate of LCC’s first OTA class, the opportunity is benefiting her tremendously.  Montemayor has worked in the Special Education Department at United Independent School District for the last three years.

Without the OTA-MOT Bridge program in Laredo, Montemayor’s chances of furthering her career would have been virtually impossible.

“I enjoy the bridge program.  The program is making it possible to get a higher education without being uprooted from my job and my community,” said Montemayor.

Through the bridge program, students take courses through web-based technology supplemented by on-campus evening or weekend instruction at the university’s Laredo extension campus.

Students are eligible for a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Sciences Degree after completion of the first two years in the program, including the second summer semester.  The candidates for graduation may participate in the School of Allied Health Sciences graduation ceremony at UTHSCSA.

The professional program includes 93–97 semester hours, depending on the background of each student and the number of Level I fieldwork courses taken. Students must complete MOT prerequisite courses. Depending on program enrollment, coursework begins in the summer semester.

The OTA program at Laredo Community College consists of classroom lecture and fieldwork.  It is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education of the American Occupational Therapy Association.  Through the program’s accreditation, graduates are able to sit for the national certification exam for the occupational therapy assistant, administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.

Prospective students who wish to apply for admission to the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at LCC may pick up an application at the LCC Allied Health Center, room 117.  The deadline to apply for Fall 2003 admission is June 15.

For more information about the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at LCC, call Gonzalez at 721-5460 or by email trgon@laredo.edu.

Dennis P. Kriewald, long-time English professor at LCC, will deliver the presentation, Shakespeare’s Country, on April 14 at 12 noon in the Yeary Library, room 146.  Admission is free and open to the campus body and the public.

Kriewald’s presentation will coincide with the 439th anniversary of the English playwright's birth on April 23.  The talk will feature pictures of Stratford, and various monuments Kriewald has visited in London for academic advancement.

An instructor of developmental and freshman composition, and British literature at LCC, Kriewald specializes in teaching sophomore Honors British literature.  He has studied for summers in English—twice at Cambridge University and thrice at Oxford University.

Kriewald holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Southwest Texas State University.

The lecture is part of a month-long celebration at the LCC library, including an exhibit showcasing books, postcards, memorabilia and a three-dimensional scale replica of the Globe Theater, where Shakespeare's plays were performed.

The display is a survey of the Bard's two principal places, Stratford-upon-Avon—where he was born—and London, where his plays were performed.  Most of the collectibles are from the collection of LCC English Instructor Dennis P. Kriewald.

The Yeary Library will also offer free movie showings upon request of the Zefferelli versions of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet.

For more information about National Library Week activities at LCC, contact Wisner by calling 721-5280.  The Library is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon; and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.

LCC to promote math this week

Laredo Community College students and faculty members with a penchant for math and art will join their counterparts across the nation to celebrate Math Awareness Month on April 14 and 16 on the college campus.

This year’s observance will focus on the connection between mathematics and art, which dates back to thousands of years.

LCC Math Instructor Laura Huerta said that the ancient Greeks and Romans used mathematics in sculptures and to aesthetically design buildings.

In the 15th century Leonardo da Vinci wrote "Let no one read me who is not a mathematician."

In the 16th century Durer employed mathematics to introduce perspective in drawings.

In the 18th and 19th centuries mathematics was extensively used in the design of Gothic cathedrals, Rose windows, mosaics and tilings.

In the 20th century geometric forms were fundamental to the cubists and many abstract expressionists.

In recent decades several award-winning sculptors have used topology as the basis for their pieces.

To bring awareness to this observance on the local front, LCC will host two community-wide events.

On Monday, April 14, the LCC Math Department will host a Poster Competition for middle school students, and a Math Bowl for high school and college students.  Winners of the competitions will receive prizes.

The celebration will continue on Wednesday, April 16, when LCC host a Math Awareness Celebration at 4:30 p.m. in the de la Garza Building, room 101.

Highlights of the event will include the presentation of a proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Laredo, proclaiming the month of April as Math Awareness Month in Laredo.  The guest speakers of the celebration will be LCC Math Instructors Armando Perez and Jose Rico.

The event, hosted by the LCC Math Department, is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the community.

For more information about Math Awareness Month activities at LCC, contact Huerta by calling 721-5485 or 721-5441.

Border Telecommunications and the Future”

conference brings border communities together to share

resources

A "Border Telecommunications and the Future” conference, was held at Laredo Community College on Friday, April 11, to unveil FronteraTEC, a border-wide project seeking to increase technology-sharing initiatives among community-based institutions. The conference also assessed the regional impact of the state’s Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF).

The conference was from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the de la Garza Building, room 101, on the LCC campus. Persons interested in what telecommunications technology can mean for their community were encouraged to participate in the town meeting.

“Countless Texas children have benefited from the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund,” commented State Senator Judith Zaffirini, who is expected to make opening remarks at the event. “In less than eight years, TIF has allowed Texas to surpass other states in creating access to technology for all citizens. Senate District 21 has received $38 million from TIF funding, and since 1995 the ratio of students to computer has changed from 20- to-1 to 4-to-1 in both rich and poor districts. Today 96 percent of Texas classrooms are equipped with Internet access. Nine hundred libraries now are information technology centers with high-speed Internet connections. The organizations using TIF funds include libraries, health care centers, county governments and schools. From the Rio Grande City Library to the El Cenizo Community Center, TIF funds are creating access to technology that otherwise would be unavailable.”

“The question now is to assess funding priorities and budget realities” she continues. “TIF is an example of a government program that works. For Texans to stay economically competitive, access to the latest computer technology is imperative. Continuing to fund TIF is the best way to ensure that Texas keeps narrowing the gap in the digital divide."

“I'm proud to have voted to establish the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund,” says Rep. Richard Raymond (D- Laredo). “I think we have seen the direct positive impact that TIF funds have had on communities across the state of Texas and in particular Laredo and surrounding areas.”

The conference is expected to attract city and county officials, and members of the state and federal delegation to open the conference with a “town meeting–style” forum in which area leaders and residents share views on today’s telecommunications technology and what the future may hold.

The second segment of the meeting is an introductory workshop for area schools, libraries and health facilities to participate in the FronteraTEC border-wide online inventory. Each school, college, library, and not-for-profit health care facility in Webb, Val Verde, Maverick, Kinney, and Zapata counties has been invited.

As the fiscal agent and lead collaborative partner for the FronteraTEC project, Laredo Community College officials are pleased to be making a difference in the Laredo community and surrounding region.

“This is an exciting endeavor which Laredo Community College is pleased to be spearheading,” said LCC Chief Development Officer Blas Castañeda.  “By bringing our partners together, we will be able to implement ways to share valuable resources through high technology.”

The conference at LCC is one of several being planned by the Rio Grande Institute, a “border-focused” non-profit research and education organization based in Marathon, Texas, in conjunction with the FronteraTEC consortium.

“Since its creation in 1995, TIF has awarded over $80 million in technology grants to institutions on the border,” says Len Materman, the Institute’s Executive Director. “The grants to provide up-to-date computers and software, Internet access, and staff training.  Now, with tightening budgets and changing technology, TIF is looking to ensure that this investment in our institutions can be sustained in the years ahead. FronteraTEC will provide technical assistance to the institutions, find new ways to share technology resources, and plan for the future.” In issuing an invitation to participants Materman commented, “we look forward to exploring with these communities the ways we can make TIF grants more effective and have a free and open exchange on the future of telecommunications in this region.”

Resource-sharing between TIF grantees is a primary FronteraTEC goal. Materman said the process is simple: “First, TIF grantees complete an online inventory of their technology resources. Then, FronteraTEC consortium partners help the participants build relationships with one another to fulfill their technology needs.”

Materman provides this example: “A rural health clinic in need of online health information does not possess a high-speed Internet connection, while the connection at a nearby library sits idle for part of the day. By allowing doctors and patients to use library computers at certain times, the library receives its operating funds, and the clinicians and their patients can access the information they need.”

FronteraTEC is a collaboration of the non-profit Rio Grande Institute, Texas State Library, all border community colleges, and the border programs of the UT and Texas Tech Health Science Centers, with funding from the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF) Board and the Tocker and RGK Foundations.  Information is available online at www.fronteratec.org.

To learn more about the FronteraTEC project in Laredo, contact Javier Perez, Director of FronteraTEC at LCC, by calling 764-5764 or by e-mail at jperez@laredo.edu.

LCC Opens Employee Training Center

Building on its most valued resource, its employees, Laredo Community College this week launched an internal training center that will provide technical skills to all levels of college staff. The Employee’s Technology Advancement Center (ETAC) at LCC was recently launched with a press announcement and open house. The ETAC is located on the second floor of Laird Hall, Room 276.

College Vice President Juan L. Maldonado said he was grateful for the support of the Texas Infrastructure Fund Board which provided a $134,577 grant to equip the employee training laboratory with hardware and software.

“We are an educational institution, and we are well-equipped to train our students in the latest advancements of technology, but we must also give our faculty, classified staff and administrators the same opportunities for personal advancement,” Maldonado said.

Goals of the ETAC are to provide employee training that will ultimately benefit the student, but the skills gained can enrich the employee immeasurably, said college President Ramon H. Dovalina.

“The employees themselves will be able to learn software programs that will give them marketable job skills that they can use at LCC, and that will help them advance their own careers,” Dovalina said.

“Faculty will be provided with the most up-to-date training on computer based teaching strategies, administrators will have better planning and management tools, and their support staff will gain valuable communication and productivity skills,” he added. “Ultimately, a better trained staff will help us deliver better service to our students using technology.”

using computerized class records, business communication, on-line testing, Microsoft programs such as Excel, Access, Word, Project, Outlook, PowerPoint, FrontPage and others.

For more information about the Employee’s Technology Advancement Center contact its director Enrique Garcia by calling 721-5398 or by email at egarcia@laredo.edu.

The Texas Education Agency recently awarded a grant to the LCC Adult Education Department to develop and launch an 11-week, pilot project for persons seeking training to enter the retail industry.

LCC Adult Education Instructional Coordinator Hector Soliz says that 14 English as a Second Language (ESL) students with a medium proficiency level in ESL are participating in the program.

Billed as a celebration and environmentally friendly fundraiser, Gator Aid will be held at the LCC LBVE Science Center from 7 to 9 p.m. A taste-tempting catered dinner of either top sirloin or red snapper and other seafood delicacies will be served.  The evening function will also feature romantic music under the stars performed by the LCC Guitar Ensemble. LCC Percussion Class in concert Friday

Auto parts and body parts may seem like unusual instruments to create music.  But for students in a percussion class at Laredo Community College, those are just two “instruments” they will use to present their Spring Concert on Friday, April 11.

Music students in a class led by Instructor Thomas Zirkle will present a percussion concert featuring music composed mostly by Zirkle and his pupils.  The event, sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Kazen College Center.  Admission is free and open to the public.

The pieces will feature African/South American drumming styles, body percussion, and non-traditional percussion instruments such as cardboard boxes, bottles, and automobile parts.

Among the highlights of the concert will be a body percussion selection written by LCC student J’hon Mansinghani, which shows the influence of rock-and-roll drum set playing of this young composer.

A trio piece composed by LCC student Carlos “Curly” Salinas, will showcase his passion for Latin-American percussion instruments mixed with a funk drum set.

“This is the first percussion ensemble that either of these students have written,” said Zirkle.  “Some of the students are percussion majors at LCC, but most are not experienced percussionists.  Several of our members are quite accomplished on other instruments such as  flute, guitar, tuba, and cello.”

Other students to be featured in the concert will include: Hacel Arias, Jose Barrientos, Christopher Cantu, Eduardo Garcia, Alejandro Garcia, Carlos Herrera, Eliborio Lopez, Luis A. Ochoa, Victor Ramos and Arnold Yzaguirre.

For more information about the percussion concert, contact the LCC Music and Dance Department by calling 721-5330.
