to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Laredo
Community College will launch its observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in
October with the distribution of information relating to the prevention of this
disease.
Beginning
October 1, the LCC Wellness Program will display information and hand out
brochures, “shower” cards (for breast self-examination) and other materials
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Maravillo Gymnasium lobby through October 31.
Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to visit.
According
to national statistics, breast cancer will strike more than 200,000 times this
year and claim more than 40,000 lives.
“This
is a serious issue which the LCC Wellness Program is dedicated to generating
awareness on the prevention of this disease for the benefit of the campus body
and the general public,” said Wellness Coordinator Lu Sparkman.
“We hope everyone takes advantage of this service.”
Sparkman
added that the college will also host a wellness lecture on breast cancer and
hormone replacement therapy, as part of the month-long observance.
The presentation will be delivered by local oncologist Dr. Eduardo
Miranda on Tuesday, October 7, at 12:30 p.m. in the de la Garza Building, room
101. Admission is free of charge to
the campus body and public.
