LCC to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Laredo Community College will launch its observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October with the distribution of information relating to the prevention of this disease.

Beginning October 1, the LCC Wellness Program will display information and hand out brochures, “shower” cards (for breast self-examination) and other materials from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Maravillo Gymnasium lobby through October 31.  Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to visit.

According to national statistics, breast cancer will strike more than 200,000 times this year and claim more than 40,000 lives.

“This is a serious issue which the LCC Wellness Program is dedicated to generating awareness on the prevention of this disease for the benefit of the campus body and the general public,” said Wellness Coordinator Lu Sparkman.  “We hope everyone takes advantage of this service.”

Sparkman added that the college will also host a wellness lecture on breast cancer and hormone replacement therapy, as part of the month-long observance.  The presentation will be delivered by local oncologist Dr. Eduardo Miranda on Tuesday, October 7, at 12:30 p.m. in the de la Garza Building, room 101.  Admission is free of charge to the campus body and public.

For more information, contact Sparkman by calling 721-5326.  Campus office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
