LCC Community Education offers new schedule of

courses

This fall, the Community Education Department at Laredo Community College is offering new and innovative avenues to DO MORE NOW, including new online courses to fit busy schedules.

“The LCC Community Education Department is expanding its class schedule by offering non-credit continuing education classes via the Virtual College of Texas and Ed2Go online course programs,” said CE Director Lewis Pack.

“VCT courses have been popular with students in our regular college semester programs.  LCC hopes to achieve similar success in its Community Education Department,” said Pack.  “Additionally, the Ed2Go online courses should interest students, as well.  There is a myriad of courses to choose from, ranging from Internet and desktop publishing to business management and healthcare.  All courses allow students to acquire skills from the comfort and convenience of their home or office.”

LCC has also created a new Administrative Assistant Certificate program to prepare students from different academic backgrounds to be fully functional in today’s modern office.  Students can choose to enroll in an intensive 8-week daytime or convenient 16-week evening program.

The certificate program will provide training in six basic areas, including an introduction to general office skills, intensive keyboarding skills development, fundamentals of Microsoft Word processing, comprehensive communication skills training for business and industry, intensive skills training for Microsoft Excel, and an introduction to the Internet and e-mail for administrative assistants.

Other career-oriented training opportunities available to adults include the new Business Academy to upgrade business skills and network with colleagues from different industries, and a course for the notary public.  An array of computer classes is also available, including a new “Computer Crash Course” which covers practically every aspect of the computer from spreadsheets, folders, bytes, printing and databases.

The LCC Community Education Department is also offering classes for students who need immediate preparation for the General Educational Development certificate or English as a Second Language.

Training is also available for the legal assistant and the food service manager.  Legal assistant courses include Family Law, Introduction to Legal Assisting, and Torts and Personal Injury Law.  Food service management courses include opportunities for participants to obtain certification or recertification for owners and operators of establishments, which prepare and serve food to the public.

Also available this fall at LCC are courses for the substitute teacher, a Security Officer Academy and vocational-technical education courses for the electrician and welder.

LCC is also offering courses for self-enrichment for persons seeking a new hobby or a healthier lifestyle.

This includes the “What’s for Supper?” class, a basics to creating mouth-watering cooking.  The two-day class, which meets on Saturdays, will cover recipes from south of the border and Mediterranean cuisine under the direction of master chef Roberto Maldujano.

Persons with a creative flair should consider the Spray Paint Air Brush class, which shows students how to create art using spray paint airbrush techniques.

Wellness courses include a Strength Training class for those seeking an efficient and safe weight training program to meet their personal needs, and a Self Defense course, which instructors say will improve a person’s self confidence and teach them the basics of martial arts.

Classes are offered at various days and times.  To learn more, contact the LCC Community Education Department by calling 721-5374 or visit the LCC website at www.laredo.edu/ce.
