LCC highlights advanced music technology today

The Laredo Community College Music and Dance Department invites students and the public to view the latest educational tools in music technology during an Open House for the new Computer Music/Piano Lab today (Nov. 11).

The new music education facility—located in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center, room 103, on the college campus—will be open to the public on Nov. 11 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 6 p.m.  Special presentations by LCC Music Instructors Dr. Susan Liu and Thomas Zirkle will be offered at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The Computer Music/Piano Lab at LCC features 17 stations of Korg Le88, Digidesign MBox and Dell computers with sophisticated software for composition, ear training and theory, and advanced sequencing and digital audio recording. There are also 3 separate stations featuring Digidesign digi002 which is a Fire-Wire-based pro Tools LE music production system.

This lab is primarily used for classes in piano, computer music, music composition and audio editing/recording.  It also serves as the lab for music theory and aural training.

“Through the use of computers, keyboards and other technologically advanced equipment, it is possible to be a "one-man band" or orchestra. Students are learning how synthesizer keyboards operate, as well as how to record and edit music using computer software,” said Dr. Liu.

She added that the facility also features a Korg Group Education Controller 3 (GEC3), which is the heart of the group music learning system.

“From this control monitor, an instructor can assist any student on an individual basis. With individual headphones at each station, the student can work alone without disturbance,” added Liu.

In the coming Spring 2004 semester, LCC plans to offer four sections of piano classes and two sections of computer/ electronic music classes in this new facility.  Early Registration is now in progress through December 4.

For more information, contact the LCC Music and Dance Department by calling 721-5330.  Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
