LCC opens new GED Test Site at Job Corps

Laredo Community College and the Laredo Job Corps on Tuesday opened a new site for Laredoans to receive the General Educational Development (GED) Tests.

College and job corps officials gathered Tuesday to officially open the addendum test site at the Laredo Job Corps Center, 1701 Island Street, on the city’s west side. Job Corps students will no longer have to travel to the LCC campus to receive the GED tests. Community members will also have the option to take the series of GED exams at the new site, which will also expand the number of seats available during announced testing dates.

Tuesday was the first day of GED testing at the Laredo Job Corps Center, according to Harold Tatum, Director of LCC’s Assessment Center. Permission was acquired from the GED Testing Service to transport the materials and to administer the exams at the remote site.

The Laredo Job Corps Center is a residential training facility owned and operated by the Vinnell Corporation for the U.S. Department of Labor. It opened its doors in 1980 and operates its training programs under a contract with LCC.  John M. Bruce is the Center Director. Saul Gonzalez, Jr., coordinates the services provided by the college to the LJCC.

More than 300 students, ages 16-24, receive career guidance, job preparation training and college level instruction through the Job Corps Center in Laredo.

Those enrolled in college skill and academic programs are also students of Laredo Community College. Many of these students who have not finished high school require the GED exam to establish their high school equivalency before they may begin college-level courses.

Among the famous Americans who obtained high school equivalency through GED testing are comedian Bill Cosby, and actor Christian Slater. One out of every seven high school diplomas issued each year in the United States is based on passing the GED Tests.

For more information, contact LCC Assessment Center, 721-5418.  Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
