LCC’s
Gorecki to showcase composition abroad
An original composition written by Dr. Mikolaj Gorecki, an instructor of music and piano at Laredo Community College, will be showcased during the 2003 World Music Days in Slovenia on October 3.
Gorecki is pleased to represent Laredo Community College in this festival, hosted by the International Society for Contemporary Music and regarded as one of the most important events in contemporary music worldwide. The event began on September 26.
Gorecki’s music piece, “Constellations,” will be performed by an orchestra on October 3 in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.
“The theme of this year’s festival will highlight new music for the third millennium,” said Gorecki. “I am honored to represent Laredo Community College and my community in this major music event which will present the latest and best achievements from music composers across the world.”
The Poland native, who began composing at age 10, said that the selected piece is chamber music for a small orchestra comprised of woodwinds, brass, strings and percussion.
Born in Katowice, Poland, in 1971, Gorecki began studying the violin at the age of six; a year later he began studying the piano.
In 1990, after graduating from the Secondary School of Music’s piano class, he began to study composition at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice under his father, composer Henryk Mikolaj Górecki.
Having graduated with honors from the Academy, Górecki was granted a double scholarship by the Banff Center for the Arts in Canada, where he stayed for a year, honing his compositional technique. In 1998, he began studying at the prestigious School of Music at the University of Indiana, where he was awarded his doctoral degree in musical composition in May 2000.
Górecki’s prizes and distinctions include a 1992 commission by the International Music Corporation of Tokyo, Japan, to compose two piano concertos in the style of Chopin; and in 1998 the first prize of the Young Composers Competition in Bielsko-Biala, Poland. He was commissioned for the Katowice Orchestra in Poland.
Dr. Gorecki’s works include compositions for piano and orchestra, string quartets, and quintets, among others.
