LCC student club to host cultural celebration October 9

The Laredo Community College Pequeña Barraca Spanish club invites students, faculty, staff and the community to celebrate the meaning and traditions behind Dia de Hispanidad, a popular Latin American holiday to be observed at LCC on Thursday, October 9.

Student club members will host a celebration featuring authentic Mexican foods, a poem recital and a special performance featuring the LCC Mariachi Palomino.  Rafael Hernandez, a long-time ESL/Spanish instructor at LCC, will also deliver a short presentation on the origin and significance of this holiday.  The presentations and delicacies are free of charge.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Rosalinda Herrera, LCC Foreign Languages Department Chair and Club Advisor, says that the holiday has been celebrated in several Latin American countries every October 12th since 1917.  The Latin holiday coincides with the United States’ observance of Columbus Day.

“Dia de Hispanidad, also known as Dia de la Raza, celebrates the unity of Spanish-speaking countries that share the same languages, origin and religion,” says Herrera.  “It is intended to bring these unique cultures together.”

She added that the Spanish club members are excited to host this celebration for this first time at LCC and hope to receive a great turnout to the event.

For more information, contact the LCC Foreign Languages Department by calling 721-5335.  Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
