Laredo's College and Fire Department forge new training

partnership

The City of Laredo and Laredo Community College signed an agreement Monday, January 20, that creates a new training partnership to benefit the entire community.

Laredo Mayor Betty Flores issued a proclamation prior to the document signing by LCC President Ramon Dovalina and Laredo City Manager Larry Dovalina. Also signing were Fire Chief Luis F. Sosa, Jr.; Deputy Fire Chief David H. Piton; Juan Maldonado, LCC's Vice President for Instruction and Student Development; and Blas Castaneda, LCC Chief Development Officer.

The event was held in the Kazen Student Center on the LCC Campus.

"The whole community will benefit from this partnership," said LCC President Dovalina. "The excellent training already received by local firefighters for certification will now offer the individual firefighter the opportunity to receive college continuing education credits. An associate degree will give firefighters an academic goal which makes them eligible for pay incentives. The city receives support in its training programs from an accredited institution of higher learning, and LCC can expand its training capabilities with licensing from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection."

Currently, Laredo firefighters receive the training required by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and receive the state agency's certification. Under the new training partnership, in addition to state certification, firefighters will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from LCC, which can also be applied as credit toward the first year of a proposed new Associate of Science Degree in Fire Protection Technology. LCC Dean of Workforce Education, Fred Solis, said firefighters who have previously received this first year of hands-on certification training are eligible to receive college credit towards the associate degree.

The partnership allows LCC to become a licensed Fire Academy training site by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. LCC will provide financial support for the

city's new Fire Training Academy in the form of fees for lecture and laboratory (hands-

on) training conducted by city fire department instructors. The Fire Department will also receive course fees.

Although the partnership begins immediately, course work is expected to begin in February 2003 with the cadets currently in training with the Fire Department.  The 30 new recruits are expected to complete the program with graduation in March 2004.

The new LCC/City of Laredo partnership will offer courses statewide, nationally and internationally. Students will have their choice of enrolling in Spanish- or English-language sessions.

Courses taught through the partnership will carry the program’s accreditation by the Texas State Fire Commission, Texas Department of Health, the Texas Higher

Education Board and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

For more information about the training partnership, contact Dean Solis by calling 721-5437 or contact Deputy Fire Chief Piton at 795-2350.

LCC to feature Tom DeLuca comedy hypnosis show on Jan. 29

The Laredo Community College Student Activities Office will launch its spring series of entertainment programs with the comedy hypnosis show of four-time Campus Entertainer of the Year winner Tom DeLuca on Wednesday, January 29.

Sponsored by the LCC Student Advisory Board, DeLuca’s first-time performance in Laredo will begin at 1 p.m. in the Kazen College Center.  Admission is free and open to students and the public.

DeLuca is recognized nationwide for his ability to open the windows to the imagination by combining the power of suggestion with his volunteers’ innate creativity.

The talented DeLuca was voted Entertainer of the Year for four years and was awarded 2001 Performing Artist of the Year by colleges across the country.

National media also recognize DeLuca’s talents.  He is the only college performer to be featured on NBC’s “Dateline,” as well as the front page of The Wall Street Journal.  He has appeared on daytime talk programs, including Maury Povich, CNN Showbiz Today, Regis Philbin and PBS’ Charlie Rose Show.  He has also been featured in Rolling Stone and People magazines.

LCC to fete writers, artists of new La Frontera magazine

Literature and art lovers are invited to join Laredo Community College for a reception to honor the writers and artists who contributed to the Fall 2002 edition of the college magazine, La Frontera on Thursday, January 23.

The reception will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Arena Theater inside the LCC Adkins Building.  Admission is open to students and the public.

Now in its 16th issue of publication, La Frontera recently came under the direction of LCC English Instructor/Editor Penelope Warren.

She noted a number of new features in the magazine.

“There’s a new format, with a new logo and motto, and a new typeface for the inside of the book.  There’s also more book this time around, thanks to the use of a smaller but still very open and readable typeface, and a wider variety of material,” said Warren.

A new editorial policy, said Warren, will allow the magazine to accept longer submissions.

“Another is that we will be publishing essays, particularly essays on the literature and culture of la frontera and its vibrant mix of peoples and languages.  We’re hoping to add book reviews to future issues, directed toward writings about the border,” added Warren.

A highlight of the reception will be the recognition of student and non-student award winners in the areas of poetry, prose and art.

In the student award category, the winners are Cynthia Villarreal (prose), Marcela Alvarez (poetry) and Patty Flores (art).

The non-student award winners include Carlos Flores (prose), Toni Howell (poetry) and Chuck Gonzalez (art).

Copies of the new edition of La Frontera will be available on campus.  Literature and art submissions for the Spring 2003 issue will be accepted by Warren through March 1 at Adkins Building, room 264.  For more information, contact Warren by calling 721-5335.

LCC to offer unique English class

Laredo Community College students have an opportunity to engage in stimulating coursework related to the exciting world of literature.

This spring, LCC English Instructor Randy Beller is offering a unique course in World Literature II (ENGL 2333).

The class is scheduled to begin January 13 from 11 to 11:50 a.m.  Students will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the semester.

Beller said that this class is ideal for the adventurer at heart.

“If you have ever wanted to experience places such as Japan, Honduras, Nigeria or China, this is the way to do it,” said Beller.

Students will have opportunities to read literature in English text from Latin American, South American, Asian, Native American and Black American, African and female writers.

“Students will be exposed to different cultures and learn about the similarities and differences that the writers express through their works,” said Beller.

He added that special attention will be given to “voices of peace” from all parts of the world, including the Israeli, Palestinian and Arab countries.

“If we can understand the differences between our cultures, we can live together,” said Beller.  “Students will learn that this is more than a literature class.  It is a class about cultures.”

He added that to enroll in the transfer-level course, students must have previously completed the Composition II (ENGL 1302) class.

A native of Chicago, Beller is one of the newest faculty members in the LCC English Department.  He joined LCC in Fall 2002.  An instructor of English since 1985, Beller has taught at Kankakee Community College in Illinois and at North County Community College in New York, as well as in Philadelphia and Ohio.

Beller holds a Masters degree in English from the University of Kentucky and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.  He has experience in organizing creative writing groups and events that showcase written, visual and performing arts.

Beller added that the course has generated significant interest among students and noted that classroom space is limited.

Students wanting to enroll in this or any other classes available this spring at LCC are encouraged to seek late registration on January 13 and 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. in the Maravillo Gymnasium.

For more information about the English class, contact Beller by calling the LCC English Department at 721-5335.

LCC librarian’s art on display at UT Library

The Fine Arts Library at the University of Texas at Austin is presenting an exhibit of sculptures by William Wisner, Reference Librarian at Laredo Community College.

The works, which went on display January 11, will remain at the library until May.

Wisner uses an increasingly popular media-sometimes called altered books-for his thought-provoking conceptual sculptures, which explore, among other things, the collision of technology, reading, capitalism, mass media and the disintegration of the cultural fabric as a whole.

These large themes are made particular by the gold and copper leaf which Wisner uses to burnish the surface of the books, the torched surfaces on many of the pieces or the “frightening violence” of still other works which have been shot-gunned.

“It’s interesting to me,” Wisner comments, “how predictive many of the book sculptures turned out to be.  After 9-11 it is almost impossible to make easy assumptions about continuance, and this is just the beginning.”

Wisner has exhibited widely in the region, winning several First Prizes at Laredo Art League shows, as well as exhibiting at LCC, TAMIU, the University of Texas-Pan American and the University of Texas at Brownsville.  He has written art criticism for The Cresset, New Observations, the international fashion magazine ELLE and the Kansas City Star.  His articles have also appeared in Audubon, Library Journal and most recently in The Sewanee Review.

His book about libraries, reading and technology, Whither the Postmodern Library? [McFarland Publishers] appeared in 2000.

For more information, contact Wisner by calling 721-5280.

LCC, TAMIU partnership: Music to the ears

Laredo Community College and Texas A&M International University are again joining forces to bring music to the ears of classical guitar aficionados.

A concert engagement featuring international performing and recording classical guitar artist Adam Holzman has been scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, through this unique partnership between both higher education institutions and the financial support of the City of Laredo.  The event is sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department, TAMIU Fine and Performing Arts Department and Guitar Club, in association with the City of Laredo.

Holzman’s performance is set for January 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Laredo Center for the Arts, 500 San Agustin Avenue.  Admission is free and open to students and the general public.

LCC Dance Instructor and Music and Dance Department Chair Danuta U. Gazdyszyn noted that the guest artist concert is part of continuing efforts by the university and the college to work on collaborative projects that benefit students pursuing careers in music and dance, and promotes the performing arts in the community.

Last fall, TAMIU and LCC announced a partnership to support the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra.

“Laredo Community College is pleased to be working side by side with Texas A&M International University to strengthen our ties in the performing arts.   This partnership is creating educational and cultural benefits of great value to our students and the community,” said Gazdyszyn.

Dr. Gilberto D. Soto, Associate Professor of Music and Fine and Performing Arts Department Chair at TAMIU, echoed similar sentiments regarding the partnership between both higher educational institutions.

“The partnership that Texas A&M International University and Laredo Community College have embarked on is an exciting moment for music education and the performing arts in Laredo.  We look forward to working together to ensure that this collaboration continues to grow and flourish,” said Soto.

Holzman, winner of five major international competitions, will perform music from renowned classical guitar composers, including Saudade by R. Dyens, Fantasia #1 and Fantasia #2 by G.P. Telemann, An die Entfernte by J.K. Mertz, Minuetto by Enrique Granados, Three Greek Letters by Sergio Assad and Invierno Porteno and Primavera Portena by Astor Piazzola.

“Laredoans are very fortunate to have an opportunity to listen to an incredible performer and pedagogue as Adam Holzman,” said Event Organizer and LCC Classical Guitar Instructor Cain Budds.

Holzman is the first prize winner of the 1983 Guitar Foundation of America Competition held in Canada.  He also received the bronze medal during the Third Toronto International Guitar Festival in Canada.

Holzman is the founder of the Guitar Department at the University of Texas at Austin, where in addition to his active performing career, he heads a thriving guitar studio.

The noted classical guitarist has performed at the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, distinguished New York venues such as Kaufman Hall, Merkin Hall, and Carnegie Recital Hall and music festivals and series from Miami to San Francisco, Boston to New Orleans.  His extensive international performances have taken him throughout Europe, Canada, Mexico, Central and Latin America.

Holzman’s recordings for the Naxos label have been critically acclaimed.  The first two are discs of the music of Fernando Sor and have been called “irresistible” by Gramophone Magazine.

The artist’s commitment to new music has led him to co-commission Samuel Adler’s first Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra.  He has also premiered works by such composers as Robert Helps and Stephen Funk Pearson.

From 1992 to 1994, Holzman held the title of “Maestro Extraordinario,” given by the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Monterrey, Mexico, where he served as artist-in-residence.

In 2001, he was awarded the Ernst von Dohnanyi Prize for Outstanding Achievement from Florida State University and the Robert W. Hamilton Fine Arts Award from UT.

Holzman currently resides in Austin with his wife, Carolyn, and their son, Benjamin.

For more information about the concert, contact the LCC Music and Dance Department at 721-5330 or contact the TAMIU Fine and Performing Arts Department at 326-2649.

LCC collaborates, shares courses through Virtual College of Texas

Texas History was the only course Jane needed to graduate. But because of the burgeoning enrollment at her community college, all sections of the course were full. She would need to take the class somewhere else or wait to complete her degree.

Stan faced the same dilemma with a different face. He too needed Texas History to graduate. Unfortunately, the class he registered for did not have enough students and was cancelled.

Five years ago, these students might have had to postpone graduation. Today, they are able to take the class with other students from throughout the state, including students enrolling this week at Laredo Community College, by taking courses available through the Virtual College of Texas.

The Virtual College of Texas (VCT), is a project of the Texas Association of Community Colleges which creates a conduit for students to take distance learning classes from community colleges across the state. Of these, 90 percent are taught on-line; ten percent are telecourses or originate from interactive classrooms.

“Ultimately, VCT works because of the spirit of cooperation and collaboration found among Texas community colleges,” said Bill Crowe, president of the Texas Association of Community Colleges and Tyler Junior College.

Because of VCT, students can take classes that might not otherwise be available to them; colleges fill classes that might otherwise be cancelled.

Since its inception in 1998, approximately 8,700 students have enrolled in 2,005 classes from 49 community college districts through the Virtual College of Texas (VCT). And the program is growing.

“The Virtual College of Texas has helped out Laredo Community College students who have jobs with varied shifts or personal commitments that would make it impossible to obtain a college education.  It truly has been a godsend to them,” says Beth Krueger, Director of the Center for Distance Learning at LCC.

Donna Rippenkoeger, a community college student who lives in East Texas, typifies the VCT student.

"My life is way too full to get into town to take classroom courses," the future teacher said. "After 22 years in Dallas' corporate workplace, we have 'retired' on a lake in the middle of nowhere.  I still have two children in school, a part-time job, and live 25 minutes from the college. Without VCT, I would have had to wait to return to school to pursue my teaching certification.

"These classes are not just convenient. I save money on transportation and child care," she added.  "I'm really enjoying it. So far, I've taken all of my coursework through VCT and I'm shooting for a 4.0 (G.P.A.).  Because my classes are online, I can easily go to other pertinent web sites to expand on the material.  As an example, my astronomy class has links to satellite probes. One evening while studying, I clicked on a link and watched live, via satellite, the lights come on as the sun set across the United States.

"I'm able to communicate with my classmates through on-line threaded discussions which have no time constraints.  Consequently, I get a good idea of what the other students in the class are like.

"Although I "log on" to class whenever I have the time, it's important to be self-motivated and disciplined. If not, I could easily fall behind.”

Depending on the course, Rippenkoeger takes tests in Navarro College's testing center with a proctor, online or sends them in by email. She picks up textbooks at Navarro College's bookstore or through the provider college's on-line bookstore.

These distance learning courses have been developed by faculty at providing institutions for their students enrolled at that institution. Community college students from host colleges across the state can enroll in these on a space-available basis.

LCC students who are interested in taking advantage of the Virtual College of Texas are encouraged to view the availability of courses at www.vct.org and then contact the VCT Coordinator at LCC by calling 721-5871 or by e-mail at distance@laredo.edu.  Spring registration is now in progress through January 9.

This progressive approach to sharing resources began in 1996 as a collaboration of the 50 community college districts in Texas. Community college chancellors and presidents across the state realized that by coming together, they could benefit even more students. In doing so, the program could help “Close the Gaps” by utilizing technology to increase access to distance learning courses. A survey conducted by the Texas Association of Community Colleges confirmed that courses offered by community colleges comprised the largest distance-learning catalog in the state.

Working through the Texas Association of Community Colleges, these CEOs developed an innovative strategy, the Host-Provider Model to meet this shared vision.  Students enroll at their local (host) colleges to take courses from remote (provider) institutions. Host colleges decide which courses to offer to their students, collect tuition and fees, supply student support services, and record grades on student transcripts. The providing institutions maintain faculty credentials. Students pay in-district tuition and keep their grades on the same transcript.

Planning for a three-year Virtual College of Texas pilot project started in 1997. Implementation of the project began the following year, with the support of funds from the Meadows Foundation and the Abell-Hanger Foundation.

VCT received the Star Award from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in 2001 for increasing access to Texas higher education. Governor Perry has endorsed VCT saying “Internet-based learning will provide some students the added flexibility they need to finish their education sooner, saving their parents money, while making room for additional students each year.”
