LCC sets reception for new La Frontera on Monday

Laredo Community College will host a reception to showcase the new issue of the popular college literary and art publication, La Frontera, on Monday, June 30.

Sponsored by the LCC English Department, the reception will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Kazen College Center, room 102.  Admission is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public.  Refreshments will be served and free copies of the magazine will be available.

The issue features work submitted during the Spring 2003 semester by LCC students, faculty, alumni and community members.

Frontera editor Penelope Warren noted that the literary work is primarily fiction.  The art includes reproductions of lino art, black and white and color photography, acrylic on plywood and mixed media.

Warren expressed her pride for the publication with a bit of sentimentality.  The Spring 2003 edition will be her last as editor of La Frontera.  She will retire from the college at the end of Summer Session II.

Adults are ‘Equipped for the Future’ at LCC

“Equipped for the Future” was the outcome of a new state-funded work force training project at Laredo Community College, which benefited several Laredo adults with limited English language and job skills.

A special ceremony was held on Thursday, June 26, on the LCC campus to honor the individuals who completed the 11-week pilot project.  They are Mercedes Castellanos, Maria Elena Elizondo, Maria Susana Flores, Margarita Garza, Leticia Gomez, Maria Luisa Gomez, Corina Marmolejo, Maria Ines Martinez, Maria Soledad Partida, Maria G. Ramos and Maria Ursula Rochoa.

LCC was one of four educational entities that received a grant of $26,327 from the Texas Education Agency to fulfill the EFF initiative.  The participants received valuable training to enter the retail industry.

The EFF project is based on curriculum developed by the National Institute for Literacy.  The goal of this collaborative, nationwide effort is to develop adult learning standards that can guide instruction and assessment and improve the quality and results of adult literacy programs.

The 16 EFF standards define the knowledge and skills adults need in order to successfully carry out their roles as parents, citizens, and workers in the 21st Century. These skills include strong reading, writing, and math skills; they also include the skills needed to communicate and work well with others; to solve problems; and to keep up with change.

LCC Adult Education Instructional Coordinator Hector Soliz says that the individuals were selected based on their interest in entering the retail industry.  The participants were English as a Second Language (ESL) students with different proficiency levels.

The first six weeks of the project were dedicated to providing participants with intensive instruction on retail workforce and customer service skills.

The last five weeks of the program placed the participants in valuable internships with area retail establishments, said Soliz.

During this segment of the program, participants were required to work a maximum of 55 hours.  The participating retail businesses—including J.C. Penny and K-Mart—provided a stipend of $6 an hour, which the college reimbursed the business through the grant.

“It is a tremendous work force development initiative which Laredo Community College believes benefited the community and retail businesses,” said Soliz.

He added that the participants in the EFF project will continue to improve their English language skills via the free ESL classes offered by the LCC Adult Education program.

For more information, contact Soliz by calling 764-5775 or by e-mail at hsoliz@laredo.edu.

Graduates of the first Equipped for the Future-Retail Sales training pilot project were honored by college administration on June 26 in Laird Hall, room 124.

LCC benefits from loss prevention grant program

Laredo Community College is one of only two colleges in the state to receive a loss control grant of $2,000 from the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Risk Management Fund.

Grant monies will help implement loss prevention and safety initiative to reduce the potential for property losses and on-the-job injuries and to raise loss prevention awareness.

A total of 100 public school districts and education entities received over $200,000 in grants from the Fund this year.

“Laredo Community College has been fortunate to be the recipient of this state assistance for several years,” said LCC Risk Manager Martin Villarreal, Jr.  “With this grant, the college will be able to continue to provide a safer work environment for the benefit of college employees and students.”

Edwin Thompson, TASB Loss Control Director, commented on the objectives the Board has accomplished since the inception of the Fund six years ago.

“The Fund is dedicated to partnering with its members to do everything we can to help educate staff and provide for a healthier workforce.  We are extremely proud that the Fund has awarded 438 grants totaling more than one million dollars since the program began in 1998,” Thompson said.

The 2003 grants were awarded to two colleges, 95 school districts, one education service center, one education cooperative and one county appraisal district.

“Competition has increased significantly over the years and grant applicants did a superb job of analyzing their hazardous exposures, loss prevention needs and developing loss prevention initiatives to mitigate their impact on district resources,” Thompson said.  “The review and evaluation process required an entire month and was extremely difficult given the number of well-justified applications submitted,” he said.

“Raising awareness and reducing injuries and losses is a win-win situation and this highly successful program will continue to be an integral part of the Fund’s overall focus,” added Thompson.

The TASB Risk Management Fund, created in partnership with Texas school districts, provides the most comprehensive risk management coverage available, as well as a wide  range of services in the areas of workers’ compensation, property/casualty, unemployment compensation and employee benefits.

TASB is a statewide non-profit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school districts.  School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state.

For more information about risk management at LCC, contact Villarreal by calling 721-5852.

LCC Upward Bound gets $360,000 grant

As a high school student in the mid-1970s, Miguel Peña remembers how the Laredo Community College Upward Bound program led him toward a higher education. Today, the program continues with new vigor and a $360,000 grant from the federal government.

“I came from a poor family and knew nothing about the value of a college degree or how to get one,” said Peña.  “When I joined the LCC Upward Bound program, it opened my world to college and my future.”

Pena pursued a college education and today he is a college instructor and coordinator for the Vocational Nursing program at LCC.

Established in 1971, the LCC Upward Bound program has helped hundreds of students who like Pena received support to prepare for college.  Many have advanced their lives to achieve success as nurses, doctors, attorneys, law enforcement officers, teachers and in many other professions.

The tradition of helping another generation of college-bound students will continue at LCC, thanks to receipt of the $360,383 federal grant. LCC officials were recently notified by the office of Congressman Henry Bonilla about the funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will fund the LCC Upward Bound program for the 2003-04 academic year.  The new grant is an increase from last year’s grant of $353,317.

“Laredo Community College is pleased to know the Upward Bound program is doing a quality job in preparing high school students for college and the successes that await them in their futures,” said LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina.

LCC Upward Bound Director Gerardo Martinez explained that the new funding  will  allow the college to assist 115 high school students from Laredo’s seven high schools.

“Considering that at least 14 Upward Bound programs were not funded for the new school year, Laredo Community College is pleased with the success of our grant application,” said Martinez.  “LCC will continue to assist high school students, especially ninth grade students.  Expansion of the successful Bridge Work Experience program for the Upward Bound seniors will also continue.  This summer, 25 alumni were placed in real world work settings and have acquired valuable job skills.

The Upward Bound Program is geared for students who are interested in improving their academic skills and who plan to pursue a college education.  It is specifically designed for students whose parents do not hold a four-year bachelor’s degree and are college-bound or who meet limited income guidelines.

The program works to help students’ improve their high school grade point average, raise their self-esteem, increase standardized test scores, provide assistance in applying for admission to college, and apply for financial aid and college scholarships.

Upward Bound is open to LISD and UISD high school students.

For more information, contact Upward Bound Director Gerardo Martinez at 721-5238 or 721-5240.

LCC Science Center nets $28,000 state grant

About 3,700 elementary school children from the Laredo Independent School District will have opportunities to the explore the wild at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center at Laredo Community College, courtesy of a $28,000 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant.

LCC, in partnership with the Rio Grande International Study Center and Laredo Independent School District, will launch a new and exciting environmental education initiative, known as “Wild by the River,” this fall.

The initiative will benefit third and fifth grade students in underserved areas of Laredo and surrounding rural communities. The program will provide education about wildlife, nature and the environment, said LBVESC Director Tom Miller.

“In addition to the environmental science learning currently offered by the LBVE Science Center at LCC, this program will introduce children and their teachers to several Texas Parks and Wildlife programs,” said Miller.

The LCC Science Center offers guided classes, hands-on activities, trail walks and aquatic science seminars throughout the school year to the Texas/Mexico border region surrounding Laredo.  The Wild by the River project will allow the Center to host 44 field trips for 21 LISD elementary schools.  Participants will be able to visit the LBVE Science Center for a day of science and outdoor education.  The curriculum will include four Texas Parks and Wildlife programs, including Outdoor Kids, Texas Trunks, Nature Trackers and Project WILD/Aquatic WILD.  Game Warden Henry Leal will also offer presentations to the students and teachers.

The grant funds will support costs for student transportation and entrance fees to the Science Center, as well as staff support and training.  An educational outreach coordinator will be supported through partial funding from the state grant and the RGSIC.  The state funds will also provide stipends for trained field trip guides.

The Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center will coordinate and provide the field trip activities.

For more information, contact Miller by calling 764-5701 or by email at lbvesc@laredo.edu.

LCC educator earns award for ‘labor of love’ to preserve

Zapata history

Laredo Community College educator Marie F. Rollin has been recognized for preserving a portion of regional history through her recently published book, The Fighting Padre of Zapata.

Rollin is the recipient of a Heritage Award presented by the Webb County Heritage Foundation for a book that she edited.  It chronicles the struggles of Father Edward Bastien to bring just compensation to the small community of Zapata, Texas, during the construction of the U.S.-Mexico Falcon Dam beginning in the early 1950s.

The book focuses on a collection of letters written by Father Bastien and newspaper articles that describe his passion “to help his parishioners fight the battle of their lives.”

“It’s a story of a struggle endured by a small, poor community that sought fair condemnation values for their homes which faced imminent inundation from the Falcon Dam Project,” Rollin explained.

“In his efforts to assist the people of Zapata, Texas, Father Bastien was thrust into a heroic struggle to seek justice for his parishioners when their ancestral homes and lands were condemned by the federal government to make way for the construction of the dam.”

A long-time instructor in the Foreign Languages Department at LCC, Rollin said that she worked on the book during her spare time.  Although it took a decade to create, Rollin describes the project as a “labor of love,” which she was determined to complete for special reasons.

“The book is based on a manuscript written by Father Bastien, who was a dear friend of my parents,” said Rollin.  “Prior to his death, Father Bastien handed the manuscript over to my family.  His intentions were to have his memoirs published.  My parents encouraged me to publish Father Bastien’s manuscript.”

Rollin noted how the book is filled with important history that warms the soul.

“Father Bastien did it for the poor.  He really cared for those people who had no voice.  It kept him going,” said Rollin of the Oblate priest’s efforts to defend his parishioners.

“I am deeply honored that I was given the chance to shed light on this important part of our region’s history and fulfill a promise my family made to Father Bastien,” concluded Rollin.

Rollin has also received accolades for the book through an article which she wrote for the Catholic Southwest: A Journal of History and Culture.  She received first place honors (best article, scholarly) during the presentation of the 2002 Press Awards given by the Catholic Press Association.

The book, published by Texas Western Press at the University of Texas at El Paso, may be purchased online at http://www.borderlandsbooks.com/.

Early registration for Kids and Teens College continues

Last summer, 14-year-old Marky Sepulveda discovered how college can be fun and exciting.  He was one of several youngsters who participated in a multi-media class offered by Laredo Community College through its popular Kids and Teens College.

Marky and his classmates learned the fundamentals of creating electronic presentations through the PowerPoint software program.  They got pictures of classroom scenes and graphics from the Internet to create a colorful and lively computerized slide show to highlight the various courses available through the summer enrichment program.

Now, the college is proudly displaying the fruits of these young students’ labor on the LCC cable TV channel.

“It was a cool course that my friends and I found to be very entertaining and educational.  I would definitely recommend this class to my friends,” said Marky.

Parents can find an exciting and creative outlet for their children to enjoy their summer in a college campus by registering them for Kids and Teens College.

This week, Laredo Community College will hold early registration for its popular Kids and Teens College June 3, 4 and 5 from 1 to 6:30 p.m. in the LCC Bursar’s Office, located in University Hall, room 121.

LCC will also offer Kiddie College for pre-K, K and 1st grade students.  Certified instructors work with the students to increase their vocabulary and mathematics skills, and expose them to the wonders of science, art, music and games.  Students meet Monday through Friday (June 9-27) from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The cost for the comprehensive learning program is $225, and includes lunch.
