Laredo Community College Trustees Thursday voted unanimously to name two new buildings under construction at LCC South. The new Automotive Technology Building will be named for board member Raquel Gonzalez. The new Physical Fitness Center will be named for J. C. Trevino, Jr.
Board Program and Policy Committee Chair Sabas Zapata, III, said his committee recommended the naming of these facilities to recognize the years of service both board members had dedicated to LCC. Gonzalez has served on the LCC board for 23 years. Trevino has served for 28 years.
“All I can say is thank you, it has been a pleasure to serve on this board,” said Gonzalez, a local business executive whose family has operated an auto body service facility for many years and now also ventures in real estate and operates a successful title company.
Trevino attended the Thursday night board meeting, but left before the announcement was made. Trevino also heads various family-owned enterprises in the community.
Zapata said the Board’s Program and Policy Committee had conducted a public hearing and had received community input for naming facilities over the last year. Four other structures on the current LCC campus bear the names of former LCC board members. These include the Mervil Moore Vocational Building, the Harold R. Yeary Library, the Dr. Leonides G. Cigarroa, Sr., Science Building and the Eloy Garcia Building.
The LCC South Campus is currently under construction and will open its doors to students in the spring of 2004. It will begin workforce training and community education courses in March 2004 and will offer a full course schedule to college credit students in the fall of 2004.
Other LCC South buildings have already been named, including the William N. “Billy” Hall Student Center, the Judith Zaffirini Library and the Camilo Prada Child Development Center. Board policy allows naming of facilities for service to the community and service to the college, including financial contributions to LCC.
