From the graceful sways of ballet to the curious passages of modern dance, the community will have a special opportunity to experience the beauty of these unique dance styles during the Laredo Community College “Dance In Concert” program on Sunday, April 6.
Sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department in association with the City of Laredo, the Spring 2003 dance concert will begin at 3 p.m. in the Laredo Civic Center Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.
Music and Dance Department Chairperson Danuta U. Gazdyszyn said that the college dancers are ready to entertain after months of practice with instructors who helped them perfect their skills on the dance floor.
The concert will feature performances by the LCC Lyric Ballet/Jazz Ensemble, directed by Sandra Saucedo; and the LCC Dance Theatre, directed by Gazdyszyn. A special guest performance will be presented by local choreographer/dancer Alicia Ledezma.
“The students have endured months of preparation to present a quality dance concert which I’m sure will be greatly appreciated by all who attend this free community event,” said Gazdyszyn.
She also noted how excitement continues to grow in the Music and Dance Department as construction remains on schedule for the new LCC Fine Arts Center.
“This is an exciting moment for Laredo Community College as work continues to open the new Fine Arts Center in the fall 2003. Students in the performing and visual arts will have a new home to help them better expand their talents and skills,” said Gazdyszyn.
The Dance Theatre will launch the program with the performance of Bach to Bach to Bach, a medley of music by master composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
The concert will continue with another medley. The Lyric Ballet/Jazz Ensemble featuring music by the avant-garde group, The Art of Noise, will perform this selection.
Next on the program will be a performance choreographed and danced by college students Sarai L. Araiza and Lori M. Martinez. The musical piece, Ioudas, which is Greek for Judas, is by Cedric C aka Session.
After a brief intermission, the concert will continue with a performance featuring dancers under the direction of Ledezma. The performance, entitled Olvidando Vivir, will feature the musical piece Deserta by Benoit Justras.
The Lyric Ballet/Jazz Ensemble will also perform during the concert Endless Quest by Enigma and a Sleeping Beauty Waltz featuring music by Peter Tchaikovsky.
Also, the LCC Dance Theatre will captivate the visual senses with their performances of The Orb’s Mind Dreams and Stars by Moby.
LCC students have a variety of dance classes available to them throughout the year. Some of the courses for dance majors and for personal enrichment include dance fitness, modern dance, ballet technique, dance appreciation, jazz, dance performance (ballet folklorico and Spanish dance forms), dance improvisation and dance conditioning. Many of these classes are part of the State of Texas Core Curriculum, which can be easily applied toward a bachelor’s degree at any other Texas higher education institution.
This semester, LCC will also promote the culture and traditions of Latin America through the presentation of the LCC Culturas Dance Concert, featuring the LCC Ballet Folklorico and the Flamenco Dance Troupe. The event will be held on Friday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the Laredo Civic Center Auditorium. Admission is free of charge.
For more information about the college’s music and dance courses, contact Gazdyszyn by calling 721-5330 or by e-mail at danutag@laredo.edu.

Learning how to eat a balanced meal and avoid the health problems associated with diabetes will be the focus of a Wellness Lecture at Laredo Community College on Monday, March 31.

LCC to re-offer Math TASP Workshops
The Laredo Community College Mathematics Department will once again offer a valuable opportunity for students to prepare for the math section of the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) Test through a series of workshops beginning Wednesday, April 2.
The workshops will be taught by long-time LCC Math Instructor Dr. Alejandro Perez from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in Laird Hall, room 277. The series of classes will meet on April 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 22, 23 and 24.

The TASP Test assesses the basic skills levels of students entering Texas public colleges in the fall of 1989 and thereafter. Students who score below the state minimum must enroll in developmental course work. The goal of the program is to ensure that Texas college students are successful in their academic endeavors. In addition to mathematics, the TASP Test also assesses a student’s reading and writing skills.

LCC offering second course of Japanese (culture)
Laredo Community College has received a tremendous response toward a new course focusing on the basic skills of the Japanese language.
Interest in the course, Introduction to Conversational Japanese, has been so significant that college officials have added a new section of the non-credit community education class.

Weight management focus of LCC lecture, March 26
Which diet plan is better? Is there a way to shed pounds in a snap? The answers to these and other questions relating to managing body weight will be the focus of a Wellness Lecture hosted by Laredo Community College on Wednesday, March 26.
Co-sponsored by the LCC Wellness Program and Doctors Hospital, the lecture on March 26 will be at 1 p.m. in the de la Garza Building, room 101. Admission is free and open to the campus body and the public.
Lance Cremar, a registered and licensed dietician, will lead the discussion. Cremar has been the director of clinical nutrition services at Doctors Hospital for the last seven years.
His lecture, Weight Management: Fads, Myths and Truths, will provide on overview of fad diets, healthy eating guidelines and more.
“Many people think that there is a quick fix out there for a long-term,
successful weight loss program,” said Cremar.
“However, there isn’t. Weight
loss is a gradual process that takes as long as the progression to pile on the
weight.”
Cremar holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&I-Kingsville. He served as the president of the local chapter of the American Heart Association from 1999 to 2000.

The Laredo Community College Opera Workshop will deliver the magic of live theatre to local audiences during its spring 2003 presentation of The Pirates of Penzance, which opens Wednesday, March 26.
Sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department and the City of Laredo, the musical production will be showcased at LCC March 26 through March 29 at 8 p.m. in the LCC Adkins Building Arena Theater. Admission is free of charge to students and the public.
Dr. Joseph Crabtree is at the helm of this exciting project, directing a cast of 15 student actors and stage personnel.
“The students are very talented and are the ones who suggested this project after the success of Little Shop of Horrors in the fall. They are eager and hope to present a witty and delightful evening of music,” said Crabtree.
Crabtree said he was pleased with student interest in this timeless Gilbert and Sullivan masterpiece. The Pirates of Penzance opened at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York on December 31, 1879.
“Gilbert and Sullivan are under-produced here in Laredo, and when one considers that the story lines are fit for all ages, we would really like to see more youth at the concerts,” added Crabtree.
The Pirates of Penzance tells the story of a young pirate apprentice named Frederic who has come to the end of his indentured period.
As it turns out, Frederic was indentured by mistake. His half-deaf nurse had been instructed to apprentice him to become a pilot but got it a little wrong.
At any rate, Frederic has decided to leave the pirate life forever, and though he loves his comrades dearly, devotes his life to the extermination of their kind.
However, until the sun hits noon he is still one of them. He feels obliged to point out the pirates’ weakness—they are too softhearted. Apparently, all a captive must do is plead to being an orphan and he is immediately released.
Once upon the shore, Frederic, who has never seen any woman other than his old nurse, stumbles upon a bevy of beautiful maidens. He immediately falls in love with the most beautiful of the bunch, Mabel, who graciously offers to reclaim the "Poor Wandering One."
What Frederic has forgotten, however, is that there are pirates about! Suddenly his old comrades are upon them! The lonely pirates are delighted by the beauty of their captives and recognize the situation as a "first rate opportunity of getting married with impunity."
But the girls' father, Major-General Stanley, arrives just in the nick of time and claims untruthfully to be an orphan, thus winning a brief reprieve for his daughters. The General is terrified that the pirates will uncover his lie, but Frederic eases his fears, promising to apprehend the band of pirates and put an end to their plundering.
However, when Frederic learns that due to a technicality, he is still indentured to the pirates, the complications abound.
The cast of the LCC production includes Rogelio Ramos as Major-General Stanley, Andrew Miller as Pirate King, Joe Muñoz as Samuel, Victor Rosales as Frederic, Juan Luis Perez Jr. as Sergeant of Police, Dana H. Crabtree as Mabel, Laura Valenciano and Jessica Cardenas alternating as Edith, Ariana Farias as Kate, Michelle Perez as Isabel and Josie Molina as Ruth.
A crucial part of the musical will be handled by members of the LCC Opera Workshop playing the role of the “Greek Chorus.”

Matachines
to offer performance at LCC March 27
The Laredo Community College campus body and the public will have a unique opportunity to view a performance by a local group of matachines on Thursday, March 27.
The performance, sponsored by the LCC Humanities Society, will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the campus grounds between the Kazen College Center and the Yeary Library. Admission is free of charge.
“Los matachines are composed of students from Cigarroa Middle School and Cigarroa High School,” noted Humanities Society sponsor Maria Lydia Saldivar. “Laredo Community College is elated to host this unique cultural opportunity for the benefit of our students and the community.”
The performance by los matachines is a traditional religious dance involving dancers, musicians and elders. According to an article written by former Laredoan Norma E. Cantu in the Handbook of Texas Online, the tradition can be traced to a type of widespread medieval sword dance called a morisca.
For more information about the performance at LCC, contact Saldivar by calling 721-5225 or by e-mail at mlsaldivar@laredo.edu.

As
a lifelong educator and mentor, the late Dr. Barbara Ann McCune helped countless
students discover their full potential as musicians.
As a friend and colleague, she touched the lives of many individuals in a
manner that they will cherish for life.
Laredo
Community College, "home" to Dr. McCune for 16 years before her
retirement in 1998, invites former students, friends and the community to
celebrate the life and career of a truly remarkable educator-pianist-woman
during a special concert on Sunday, March 30.
The performance will feature music from the Masters, including Sinfonia (from Partita no.2 in C minor) and Prelude (from English Suite no.2 in A minor) by J.S. Bach, Chopin’s Prelude Op. 28 no.15 in D-flat major (Raindrop), Debussy’s Bergamasque Suite, and Schumann’s Aufschwung (Soaring) from Phantasiestucke, Op.12.
Other
musical selections to be featured are Brahms’ Rhapsody in G minor Op.79 no.2,
Scherzo Op. 31 by Chopin, and Mozart’s Sonata for 2-piano, Kv.448.
"Nothing could be more fitting than for Laredo Community College to
honor and remember the life and career of Dr. Barbara Ann McCune,"
says LCC Music and Dance Department Chairperson Danuta Gazdyszyn.
"Dr. McCune was never one to seek recognition, but the contributions
she gave unconditionally to her students, friends and loved ones will forever
remain in our lives.”
Dr. McCune grew up in Lubbock where she began her study of the piano.
She attended the University of North Texas where she received a
bachelor's degree in piano performance and a master's degree in piano pedagogy.
Later, she attended Teacher's College, Columbia University in New York
City where she earned a master's degree and a doctorate in piano pedagogy.
Her doctoral dissertation was an empirical study of performance anxiety
modification.
During
the late 1960s and early 70s, Dr. McCune dedicated her service to the U.S. Army
Special Agencies in Europe and Korea as an administrator of cultural and
recreational activities. During
those years, she provided entertainment for U.S. military personnel in
occasional concerts. After her
military service, Dr. McCune taught piano privately and at the University of
Wyoming. Her teaching material at
Laredo Community College for beginners was published in textbooks for her piano
lab. She spent a sabbatical
semester at Columbia in 1994 revising it with numerous arrangements of Mexican
folk songs.
Dr. McCune retired from Laredo Community College in 1998 after 16 years of exceptional service to the college. On May 25, 1998, Dr. Barbara Ann McCune, 64, died after a courageous battle with cancer.
Dr. Susan S. Liu is in her fifth year of piano and specialized music instruction as a member of the LCC faculty. Dr. Liu is Chinese, born in Taiwan, and educated in the United States. She has spent the last 15 years studying and teaching music. Her great love for music has led her to obtain a doctorate in piano performance from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to that, she graduated from Tarleton State University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Chamgaign with a bachelor’s and master’s degree of Music respectively.
As a dedicated music teacher, Dr Liu’s greatest interests in sharing her love of piano and music with her students. In addition to music courses at LCC, she has been teaching both applied and group classes in all levels of piano, from beginners to advanced. Some of her students have gone on to pursue formal degree in the field of music.
During the four years at LCC, Dr. Liu has a special interest in combining music with state of the art technology. She has adapted techniques using computers and synthesizers to compose and publish music with greater ease. This technology has also aided many of her students to improve their musical abilities.
Liu has performed with Laredo Civic Symphony and offered a multimedia lecture to a standing-room only audience at LCC. She was also invited to play at The Distinguished Chinese Artists Recital in Houston in 1999. For the past five years, she has judged numerous piano competitions in Texas.
Ann Hughes Neel was born in Brady, Texas, leaving after high school to attend The University of Texas in Austin where she earned a Bachelor of Music Degree. In 1957 she and George Neel, Jr., a native of Laredo, were married and came to Laredo where Ann has been active in the community. She is a member of Christ Church Episcopal; a member of The Society of Martha Washington holding the office of First Vice-President, Second Vice-President, and Recording Secretary, also chairing many committees; she is an avid gardener and Certified Master Gardener involved in landscaping projects, is a member of the Book Club, Past President of The Luncheon Club, member of The Tuesday Music and Literature Club, was a founding board member of the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, Division Chairman for many years with the Civic Music Association and is currently active in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Ann is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two-Year College. Her husband George, three children and seven grandchildren are the loves of her life.
Ms. Neel has kept music a focal point after college through her association at the Laredo Junior College now Laredo Community College. She accompanied the LJC choral programs under the direction of Theron Kirk, a recognized composer and choral conductor, when he lived in Laredo in the 1960s. Ann performed Kirk's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra and The Carnival of Animals for Two-Piano and Orchestra by Camille Saint-Saens. She has been a substitute teacher in the LCC Music Department, and has also taught private piano lessons.
Neel has performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major for Piano and Orchestra, with the LJC Symphony and played piano as a member of the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra.
For many years Neel took lessons with Dr. McCune for whose memory this recital is given.
Said Neel, “Barbara was both a loving friend and superior teacher to me as well as countless other students who considered her their mentor during her tenure at Laredo Community College. Thanks, Barbara.”
Mikołaj Górecki is a faculty member of the LCC Music department. Born in Katowice, Poland, in 1971, he began studying the violin at the age of six; a year later he began studying the piano. In 1990, after graduating from the Secondary School of Music’s piano class, he began to study composition at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice under his father, composer Henryk Mikolaj Górecki.
Having graduated with honors from the Academy, Górecki was granted a double scholarship by the Banff Center for the Arts in Canada, where he stayed for a year, honing his compositional technique. In 1998, he began studying at the prestigious School of Music at the University of Indiana, where he was awarded his doctoral degree in musical composition in May 2000.
Górecki’s prizes and distinctions include a 1992 commission by the International Music Corporation of Tokyo, Japan, to compose two piano concertos in the style of Chopin; and in 1998 the first prize of the Young Composers Competition in Bielsko-Biala, Poland. He is commissioned for the Katowice Orchestra in Poland. Dr. Gorecki’s works include compositions for piano and orchestra, string quartets, and quintets, among others.

The Community Education Department at Laredo Community College is offering an opportunity for adults to learn the fundamentals of the Japanese language.
It’s a new and exciting cultural opportunity that will have students saying, Laredo no daigaku de ni hongo wo naraimasho (Let’s speak Japanese at Laredo’s college) in three days!
The class, Introduction to Conversational Japanese, will meet on Wednesdays from April 2 to April 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. on the LCC campus. The fee is only $21.50 per student.
Leading the class will be Patricia Martellotti, a faculty member of the LCC Music and Dance Department, with a bi-cultural Japanese and Italian American heritage.
She attended the Orange County Private Japanese School in California for six years. Martellotti has also visited Japan on numerous occasions, including an entire summer she spent with family who live in that country.
“In my home where I grew up, both English and Japanese were spoken,” said Martellotti. “This has given me a strong sense of both languages and their cultures. While English is my dominant language, I speak, read and write Japanese fluently.”
Martellotti said that the class will focus primarily on Hiragana, which is the most basic language of the Japanese.
“This is the first language that Japanese must master in order to progress into more complex languages such as the Katakana and the Kanji. Hiragana is composed of an alphabet system unlike the complex Kanji, which consists of more than 1,000 symbols, many of which are adopted from the Chinese language,” said Martellotti.
She asserted that that the Hiragana language is highly achievable to learn.
“In the process of learning the English and Japanese languages, I discovered that English is by far more complex to master than Hiragana,” emphasized Martellotti.
She added that the students will have an opportunity to learn the basic of the Japanese language and unique cultural aspects of this country.
The course, said Martellotti, will also focus on the music, art and food of Japan. Students will be introduced to the unique form of paper folding art called origami and will be treated to a small Japanese festival of songs, foods and desserts.
Registration for the course begins March 17 at the LCC Admissions/Registration Office, located in University Hall, room 125. Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
For more information, contact the LCC Community Education Department by calling 721-5374 or by e-mail to lpack@laredo.edu.

LCC Science Center to dedicate exhibit during open house
March 22
The Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center at Laredo Community College will formally recognize a community leader for sponsoring one of the facility’s exciting “living” exhibits during an Open House on March 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m..
The LBVSC will dedicate its Turtle Beach exhibit at 1 p.m. in honor of Dr. Sonia Rodriguez, who donated $2,500 for the benefit of the facility, said Director Tom Miller.
“Laredo Community College is pleased to recognize Dr. Rodriguez for her contribution to the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center. Her gift will help the Center move forward in its mission to continue delivering quality educational and awareness programs dedicated to the Rio Grande and its ecosystem,” said Miller.
The Turtle Beach exhibit highlights some of the land and freshwater reptiles, which are indigenous to the Rio Grande. Among the creatures in the “living” exhibit are the Texas tortoise, red ear slider, snapping turtle, map turtle, red painted turtle, and the soft shell turtle. Two Mallards and a female Canvass Back duck also reside in the display, which is composed of a man-made pond, encircled by sand and grass. Cacti and other native plants are also featured in the display.
A highlight of the event will be the relocation of the center’s juvenile and baby alligators to their new homes at the Science Center. Miller encourages everyone to check out several new “living” exhibits. Refreshments will be available during the open house.
Tickets for an upcoming fundraiser, billed as Gator Aid II, will also be available for sale. The evening function will feature a dinner, music and other fun activities at the Science Center on April 11 at 7 p.m.

LCC nursing programs offer fast, rewarding career training
The Laredo Community College Associate Degree Nursing program is currently recruiting new students who seek careers in the healthcare industry.
“Laredo Community College offers choices, including fast track options for working healthcare professionals, to complete a career in the nursing industry, where jobs are plenty and rewarding,” said Dianna Miller, Interim Dean of Health Sciences and ADN Program Director.
In May, LCC will launch a unique accelerated course of study for licensed vocational nurses and paramedics who seek to advance professionally through the ADN Transition Track.
Unlike the traditional ADN program, which is a two-year course of study, the transition program allows students to receive an Associate Degree in Nursing in one year.
"This is ideal for licensed vocational nurses and paramedics who are willing to work in a fast-paced learning environment to upgrade their professional careers," noted Miller. "The students find the transition program rewarding because they are able to balance their studies with their work commitments."
Persons who desire admission to the ADN transition program must be a graduate from an accredited Vocational Nursing or Emergency Medical Service Program and be licensed to practice in the State of Texas.
An application for the ADN Transition Track at LCC must be completed and submitted to the ADN Office, located in Lopez Nursing Building, room 126. The deadline to submit applications is April 21.
The applicant must also meet several course prerequisites for admission to the program. A proficiency exam is available to meet prerequisites in biology.
LCC is also accepting applications from prospective students for fall 2003 admission to the traditional ADN program. The deadline to file a completed application is May 22. Applications are also available in the ADN department office.
The two-year Associate Degree Nursing program at LCC prepares graduates for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN). Students implement the nursing process with client care in a structured health care setting. The students participate in hands-on clinical experience at the two local hospitals and at other sites throughout the community.
The Associate Degree Nursing Program at LCC is fully accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners (BNE) and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
For more information, contact Miller by calling 721-5252 or by e-mail dmiller@laredo.edu.

LJC exes invited to join Alumni Association Tuesday
Laredo Community College and Laredo Junior College alumni have a unique way to impact the advancement of their hometown college by joining the LCC Alumni Association. The group’s monthly meeting is set for Tuesday, March 4, at 6 p.m. in the Kazen College Center, room 121.
Tickets for an alumni benefit fundraiser will be distributed during the meeting. The benefit will offer opportunities to win exciting prizes, including a trip for two to Las Vegas, said Millie Slaughter, LCC Alumni Coordinator.
“Tickets will be available from any member of the LCC Alumni Association. We encourage everyone to get involved and support this worthy cause, which benefits a variety of initiatives for the benefit of the college and its students,” said Slaughter.
Membership to the Alumni Association is open to all former students who attended LJC/LCC for at least one semester.

The Harold R. Yeary Library at Laredo Community College will officially launch a new exhibit about trains and their history on Tuesday, March 4.
A reception is set for 10 a.m. in the library foyer. Students, faculty, staff and the public are encouraged to attend. The exhibit will be displayed through March 28.
Entitled "A Fascination with Trains," the objects on display are from the collection of LCC Distance Learning Director Beth Krueger, who has had a passion for trains and industrial history since childhood.
“The exhibit is also appropriate for our region considering that Laredo is one of the premier train-freight centers in all of the Americas. Trains present fascinating insights into history, but they also link up with concepts from economics, art, photography and technology,” said Reference Librarian Bill Wisner.
The exhibit features train and railroad memorabilia, including spikes, original photographs of trestles, postcards, switch keys and date nails.
Krueger has provided extensive notes and some publications featuring photos of trains which she has captured on film and stories about them which she has written.
“The exhibit should fascinate students and anyone interested in learning a little more about these commonplace--and yet quite amazing--vehicles in our midst,” said Krueger.
The LCC library is open Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m.
For more information, contact Wisner by calling 721-5280 or by e-mail at bwisner@laredo.edu.
