The Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center at Laredo Community College celebrated a significant milestone on Wednesday, May 28, when the center welcomed its 50,000th visitor.
LCC President Ramon Dovalina gave Newman Elementary Student Priscilla Elizondo a certificate and other gifts recognizing her as the Center’s 50,000th visitor since it opened its doors in 1999. The center, named after Laredo philanthropist Lamar Bruni Vergara, was established by LCC as a living laboratory for college students and local school children to observe animal and plant life while studying the eco-systems of the lower Rio Grande.
Priscilla, the daughter of Magdalena and Federico Elizondo, is a fourth grade student who enjoys studying math and science. When asked which was her favorite exhibit at the Center, Priscilla said, “The alligators, of course.”
The Center is home to a family of native alligators, now ranging in size from several inches, to several feet in length. Foxes, turtles, ducks and dozens of other species can be observed and their natural habitat studied at the center throughout the summer as part of the annual LBVESC summer youth camps.
LBVESC Director Tom Miller says camp sessions will include one week, half-day sessions for ages 6 to 8 and one-week sessions for ages 9 to 15.
Junior campers (ages 6-8) will meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Daycare is available until 4:30 p.m. for an additional charge.
Camp sessions for ages 9 to 15 will be from Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Awards will be presented to all campers at the completion of each session. Lunch will also be provided.
The LBVESC Summer Camp 2003 sessions will be held: June 2-6, ages 6-8; June 9-13, ages 9-11; June 16-20, ages 12-13; July 30-July 3, ages 6-8; July 7-11, ages 9-11; July 14-18, ages 12-13; and July 28-August 1, ages 6-8.
The fee for
each junior camp (ages 6-8) session is $100.
The camp sessions for ages 9-13 is $150 and the advanced camp (ages
13-15) is $175. All campers must be covered by their family’s medical
insurance in case of illness or injury while in camp.
For more information or to sign up for the LBVESC Summer Camps, call
764-5701.

LCC
welding course opens door to job opportunities
A
new welding course at Laredo Community College that offers links to a rewarding
job opportunity with a private firm has generated significant interest among the
area welding community.
To
meet the demand for this special career training course, the college will offer
two additional courses this summer.
Registration
is now in progress for the second and third section of the community education
course, Introduction to Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW).
The second section will be from Monday through Thursday, June 9-July 3.
A third section also meets Monday through Thursday, starting July 14 and
ending August 7. Participants in
both classes will meet from 6 to 11 p.m. on the college campus. The first section was successfully launched on May 5 with
significant community interest.
Instructor
Armando Alfaro will lead the course, which he says will study the principles,
setup and use and safety of flux cored arc welding. Instruction will also cover
various joint designs using self-shielding and dual-shield electrodes. The
course will also emphasize flux cored structural plate welding applications.
Alfaro
also indicated that the course is endorsed by the Gulf Marine Fabricators in
Aransas Pass, which will be recruiting welders from the class.
“Participants
who complete the course and pass a guided bend test on 1” plate in the 3G and
4G position may be considered for employment as a structural welder with Gulf
Marine Fabricators,” noted Alfaro. The
tuition and fees for the FCAW course is $260 per participant.
For
more information, contact Alfaro by calling 721-5396.

Resource
sharing is focus of border communities conference
A
conference to discuss Border Telecommunications and
the Future held recently at Laredo Community College unveiled FronteraTEC,
a border-wide project seeking to increase technology-sharing
initiatives among community-based institutions.
LCC
is the fiscal agent and lead collaborative partner for the FronteraTEC project.
College
officials told the gathering of school and community leaders that LCC is
committed, within the limits of its resources, to maintain its leadership role
in education-related telecommunications for the region.
“This
is an exciting endeavor which Laredo Community College is pleased to be
spearheading,” said LCC Chief Development Officer Blas Castañeda.
“By bringing our partners together, we will be able to implement ways
to share valuable resources through high technology.”
The
conference began with
a “town meeting–style” forum in which participants shared views on
today’s telecommunications technology and what the future may hold.
Castañeda
delivered an overview on the FronteraTEC project, including the initiatives’
partners, which include 14 counties along the Texas border region.
He provided statistics about the region, including LCC’s success with
its technology-infused Teacher Certification program.
The college’s TCP student passing rate of 100 percent exceeds the
state’s average 85 percent passing rate.
Rebeca
Guevara of Mercy Health Center spoke about that institution’s Telemedicine
program and its success in controlling diabetes.
The
conference also assessed the regional impact of the state’s Telecommunications
Infrastructure Fund (TIF). Since
its creation in 1995, TIF has awarded over $80 million in technology grants to
institutions on the border.
The
grants provide up-to-date computers and software, Internet access, and staff
training.
Frank
Taylor of Brackett Independent School District mentioned how the school district
used TIF funds to support several of its programs.
Also,
Lisa Finch of the Eagle Pass Public Library shed light on how TIF resources are
helping patrons at the library find employment through a technology program.
The
conference then shifted to a question-and-answer session with most of the
discussion focusing on technical support issues that schools are experiencing.
One
school district official commented on the staffing issues that the district’s
Information Technology Department is facing.
It was explained that the district has one technician for every 700
personal computers, which makes support almost impossible to provide.
A
possible solution that was presented at the conference was to create a Call
Center for this type of support, including a database of available technicians.
This issue will be addressed by the Information Technology departments of
United ISD, Laredo ISD, LCC and TAMIU in future meetings.
Jeanne
Sinclair of the Rio Grande Institute addressed the last item on the conference
agenda. She showed FronteraTEC
partners how to complete a border-wide online inventory on the FronteraTEC web
page. She stressed that the
inventory must be completed by each participating institution, including the
counties of Webb, Val Verde, Maverick, Kinney, and Zapata.
The
conference at LCC is one of several planned by the Rio Grande Institute, a
“border-focused” non-profit research and education organization based in
Marathon, Texas, in conjunction with the FronteraTEC consortium.
FronteraTEC
is a collaboration of the non-profit Rio Grande Institute,
Texas State Library, all border community colleges, and the border programs of
the UT and Texas Tech Health Science Centers, with funding from the
Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF) Board and the Tocker and RGK
Foundations. Information is available online at www.fronteratec.org.
To
learn more about the FronteraTEC project in Laredo, contact Javier Perez,
Director of FronteraTEC at LCC, by calling 764-5764 or by e-mail at jperez@laredo.edu.
Chief Development Officer Blas Castañeda spoke about
the FronteraTEC initiative during a conference focusing on border
telecommunications and the future at Laredo Community College last month.
Partners of the LCC-led partnership, FronteraTEC, gathered on the college
campus to discuss ways to share technology resources for the benefit of the
region.

When Gerardo Martinez entered Laredo Community College’s Adult Education program, he embarked on a mission to learn the English language and the subject matter needed to pass the General Educational Development (GED) Test for a certificate of high school equivalency.
Seventeen months later, his determination paid off.
The learning basics he received at LCC will allow him to achieve higher goals in his career and life, and help him fulfill his desire to inspire and motivate his two children to finish high school and pursue a college education.
On Friday, May 9, the 32-year-old Laredo native will join individuals with similar accomplishments—persons who have taken obstacles and turned them into opportunities—during the college’s formal ceremony for the 2003 graduates of the General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
Martinez was chosen by a committee of instructors to serve as this year’s student commencement speaker. The LCC GED Graduation will be on May 9 at 7 p.m. in the Maravillo Gymnasium.
Martinez was born in Laredo; but he was raised in Mexico in the community of Lampazos, Nuevo Leon.
Fourteen years ago, Martinez returned to his hometown. Soon after, he married. For the past eight years, he has supported his family as a journeyman plumber for a local company. He is currently a foreman at the future site of the college’s second campus, Laredo Community College South.
Martinez enjoys the ability to “work with his hands.” But, until a few years ago, he never imagined himself sitting in a classroom—and enjoying it.
His
outlook on education began to change about two years ago, when he realized that
he needed a high school diploma to advance his career to the next level
as a
licensed master
plumber. More importantly, Martinez
decided to pursue
his GED certificate to “set an example” for his children—seven-year old
Carolina, a first grade honors student; and four-year-old Gerardo, who starts
pre-kindergarten classes this fall.
“I started thinking that it was important for me to get an education in order for my kids to realize the benefits they get from attending school,” said Martinez.
He began his journey at LCC by enrolling in pre-GED and English as a Second Language classes. Soon after, he progressed into higher-level adult basic education classes.
A few weeks ago, Martinez received a letter from the State, notifying him of meeting the requirements to receive his GED certificate.
“I actually started liking the idea of going to classes. The LCC instructors are very friendly, helpful and patient with the students. Now that I have finished my studies in the Adult Education program, I am going to miss it all,” said Martinez.
The notion of being away from the classroom will hopefully be short-lived for Martinez. He has an interest in electronics. Eventually, Martinez hopes to enroll in college-level coursework at LCC and perhaps put his working hands and his new knowledge to work for the next stage of his life.
For more information about the LCC Adult Education program or the GED Graduation Ceremony, contact Adult Education Director Carmen Seibert-Martinez at 721-5436 or by e-mail at csmartinez@laredo.edu.

Local physical education experts and coaches Dr. Sara Carrasco and Sylvia Barrera will once again join forces to host the popular LCC Basketball Day Camp. Carrasco is the Department Chairperson of the LCC Kinesiology Program and former coach. Barrera is the head coach of the Cigarroa High School ladies basketball team.
Two sessions of the basketball camp will be offered, meeting Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the LCC Maravillo Gymnasium. The first session will be from June 2 to 12. The second session will be from June 16 to 26.
Enrollment is open to kinder, elementary and middle school boys and girls, beginning with age 5 and ending with middle school students who have not played varsity basketball.
“Laredo Community College is pleased to once again offer a fun and recreational summer experience for the benefit of area youth. Our head clinicians are college and high school coaches who love working with young people and who really live the game,” said Carrasco.
In addition to helping campers develop their athletic abilities, coaches hope the camp will give participants a dose of self-confidence and positive discipline.
Highlights of the camp include individualized instruction, challenging age-level league play and awards for all competition.
Camp fee is $50 per session. Camp T-shirts are available for $10.
Young baseball athletes and fanatics can also spend their summer at LCC during the Palomino Summer Baseball Camp from June 23-26 at the LCC Doc Sanchez Baseball Field.
Head Clinician will be Chase Tidwell, an all-conference standout at LCC (1996-97) and Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana. Tidwell is currently assistant coach for the LCC baseball team.

“Laredo Community College is pleased to be reaching to the youth in the community with the Summer Baseball camp,” says Tidwell. “This will be a valuable opportunity for the participants to brush up their skills on the field in preparation for next season.”

The Head Baseball Coach for the Laredo Community College Palominos submitted his resignation Sunday, citing family and personal reasons. Ruben A. Lozano has led the Palominos since 1999. His resignation will take effect August 31.
“It is admirable that he is also thinking of the team, knowing that we play in a tough conference that is very challenging,” Dovalina said, in accepting Lozano’s resignation. “The Region XIV conference champion often becomes the NJCAA champion. LCC competes in a very demanding and rigorous conference.”
Dovalina and Athletic Director Troy Van Brunt said Lozano did well for LCC in the last four years and they expect to select a head coach who will carry on Lozano’s work and perhaps raise the team’s potential to challenge the conference champion, San Jacinto College, in the next season.
Lozano joined the Palominos as Head Coach in the fall of 1999 after 22 years as a high school coach. He is a former outfielder for Bacone Community College in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and finished his playing career at Trinity University in San Antonio.
Van Brunt said Lozano will continue to support the college’s upcoming events, including the South Texas All Star Games scheduled for Friday, July 4. This year’s event is tentatively scheduled to be a doubleheader with the first game at Fort McIntosh Park and the night game at Veteran’s Field. He will also work with Assistant Baseball Coach Chase Tidwell to continue the recruitment process that is critical for the Palominos’ next season.

Registration is now in progress for the community education course, Introduction to Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), which starts on May 5 and concludes on May 26. Participants meet from Monday through Friday from 6 to 11 p.m.
Instructor Armando Alfaro will lead the course, which he says will study the principles, setup and use and safety of flux cored arc welding. Instruction will also cover various joint designs using self-shielding and dual-shield electrodes. The course will also emphasize flux cored structural plate welding applications.
Alfaro also indicated that the course is endorsed by the Gulf Marine Fabricators in Aransas Pass, which will be recruiting welders from the class.
“Participants who complete the course and pass a guided bend test on 1” plate in the 3G and 4G position may be considered for employment as a structural welder with Gulf Marine Fabricators,” noted Alfaro.
The tuition and fees for the FCAW course is $180 per participant.
