LCC
represented at Pre-Calculus Summit
Anna Maria Mendiola of Laredo Community College was one of two Texas math educators who were invited to participate in a four-day conference on issues dealing with pre-calculus education.
Mendiola, a long-time instructor and department chairperson of the LCC Math Department, attended the Sullivan Pre-Calculus Summit, held in June in San Diego, California.
The all-expenses paid conference was sponsored by Prentice Hall. During the summit, Mendiola had an opportunity to meet Michael Sullivan, a leading author of several college mathematics books, some of which are used at LCC.
Math faculty members from only 12 community colleges and universities nationwide were selected for this prestigious event. LCC and a Dallas community college were the only schools from Texas invited to participate.
“The opportunity to attend this summit was an honor and valuable experience for the benefit of Laredo Community College students,” said Mendiola. “The conference primarily focused on issues and concerns relating to pre-calculus and students. The opportunity to network with other faculty members and meet author Michael Sullivan were highlights of the summit.”
Mendiola added that the author was especially interested in receiving feedback from the faculty on changes that should be implemented in future publications of the student math books.
“The majority of the concerns targeted the increased use of technology in pre-calculus education and the impact it is making in students’ lives, including costs associated with the utilization of the technology and state mandates from the Coordinating Board,” noted Mendiola.
