LCC,
RGISC to host nature talks on Wednesday; prepare for Dia del Rio
Laredo Community College and the Rio Grande International Study Center (RGISC) invite the community to observe the approaching Dia del Rio celebration by joining in on a three-part lecture focusing on the native flora and fauna of the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo on Wednesday, October 15.
The Oct. 15th presentations will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in the de la Garza Building, room 101. Admission is free and open to students and the public.
Among the presenters will be local freelance photographer/retired LCC instructor Penny Warren, environmentalist Ron LaDuque, and master gardener Danny Gunn. Warren will speak about and show photos of the butterflies of the region. LaDuque will focus on the birds of the local ecosystem and Gunn will deliver a talk on the native plants that compliment the river.
The nature talks on the LCC campus will lead to the ninth annual Dia del Rio environmental work day on Saturday, October 18, at the Paso del Indio Nature Trail, located on the north side of the college campus.
Registration for the work day, which is open to students of all ages and the public, will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the LCC Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center. The clean-up will continue through 11:30 a.m. Lunch, courtesy of Golden Corral, will be provided to all volunteers.
“Everyone who cares about the future of Rio Grande is invited to join,” said LBVESC Director Tom Miller. “Volunteers are needed for picking up debris and trail building along the river banks.”
