LCC
lecture to focus on popular form of exercise
Pilates, a popular and innovative system of mind-body exercise, will be the focus of a wellness lecture and demonstration, presented by a local exercise specialist on Tuesday, September 23.
The LCC Wellness program will host the presentation on Sept. 23 at 12 noon in the LCC Maravillo Gymnasium. Admission is free of charge and open to students and the community.
Ida Gutierrez, a licensed physical therapist, certified fitness specialist and LCC honors alum, will deliver the Pilates talk and demonstration. She says that this unique form of exercise is popular with professional dancers, athletes and others who seek an avenue to build strength without developing excess bulk.
“With Pilates, you create a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen,” said Gutierrez. “It teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. Pilates improves flexibility, agility and economy of motion.”
Pilates is even known to alleviate back pain since it also focuses on strengthening back muscles.
The full body workout was developed by German-born Joseph J. Pilates in the 1900s. According to historians, Pilates was a frail child who suffered from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. He learned to overcome these weaknesses through his own exercise regime. Pilates overcame his physical limitations and was posing for anatomical drawings by the age of 14.
Pilates
went to England in 1912 where he was able to refine his ideas.
He introduced his innovative exercise concept to United States when he
moved here in the 1960s. Pilates
continued to train clients in his studio until his death in 1967 at the age of
87.
Today, 5 million Americans practice Pilates and the numbers continue to grow.
