LCC to join Red Ribbon observance on Wednesday

Laredo Community College will join thousands of citizens nationwide to promote on campus a drug-free lifestyle during the national observance of Red Ribbon Awareness Day on Wednesday, October 22.

LCC will present its annual Red Ribbon Day community fair from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the Kazen College Center.  The event is sponsored by the local Red Ribbon coalition, LCC Health Services, the Counseling Center and the Student Advisory Board.  The event is free and open to students and the public.

Local, county and state, community and law enforcement agencies will display information and distribute literature about their services and on drug abuse prevention.

“Laredo Community College and the Red Ribbon Coalition annually join forces to show our students and the community the detrimental effects of using illicit drugs,” said Health Services Coordinator Carmen Garcia.

Among agencies that have been invited to participate are the Association for the Advisement of Mexican Americans, Community Supervision and Corrections Department, Drug Enforcement Agency, Gateway Community Center, Laredo Crime Stoppers, Laredo Health Department, Laredo Police Department (Community Relations, El Protector and SWAT), South Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Stop Child Abuse and Neglect, Texas Department of Transportation, U.S. Customs, Webb County District Attorney, Webb County Juvenile Department, Webb County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Border Patrol, FBI and the Laredo Fire Department.

The Red Ribbon campaign was launched in memory of DEA agent Enrique Camarena, who was murdered by drug traffickers in 1985.  The red ribbon has become the symbol for the nation’s war against drugs.
