LCC hosts book signing for former instructor Marie Rollin

Laredo Community College students and area history buffs had an opportunity to meet former LCC professor Marie Rollin during a book signing ceremony on Monday, October 6.

Rollin, a former instructor of foreign languages at LCC, recently edited the book, The Fighting Padre of Zapata, published by Texas Western Press of the University of Texas at El Paso.

Sponsored by the LCC Yeary Library, the event was on Oct. 6 in the library foyer.

The publication traces the efforts of Father Edward Bastien, who in the early 1950s, led a fight to gain fair compensation for poor homeowners whose land was threatened with inundation by the waters of the newly-constructed Falcon Dam and reservoir near Zapata.

LCC Reference Librarian Bill Wisner says that copies of Rollin’s book will be available for purchase and that the former educator will be available to answer questions about her research.

“The book will appeal to anyone interested in Texas history, the history of South Texas or that region which has been so powerfully shaped by the reservoir,” says Wisner.

In addition to the book signing, the LCC library will have a display of numerous period photographs and a rare souvenir program from the dedication of the dam on October 19, 1953.  A companion publication, issued by International Bank of Commerce, will also be on display, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Falcon Dam this month.  Refreshments will be served.

For more information about the book signing, contact Wisner by calling 721-5280.
