LCC to offer new course on history, culture of Samurai

The Laredo Community College Community Education Department is creating a spin-off to a popular conversational Japanese course offered last semester.

This fall, persons can expand their knowledge of the Japanese culture by enrolling in a new course, entitled, Introduction to the Samurai.  Patricia Martellotti, who taught the Japanese class last spring, returns to teach the new class.

The course will be offered on Wednesdays from October 22 to November 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the LCC campus.  The cost is $40 per person.

Participants will explore the mystical Samurai era and the way of the swordsmen through lecture and group discussion, said Martellotti.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to experience the cultural dialogue and traditions of the samurai,” said Martellotti.  “The class will also offer students an opportunity to expand their conversational Japanese skills.”

In addition, students will also view the literary work and thought-process strategies of Japan’s greatest Samurai—Miyamoto Musashi, said Martellotti.

“Many of Musashi’s strategies are still widely used to achieve success in business, management and other global professions,” added Martellotti.

To register for the class, visit the LCC Admissions/Registration Office, located in University Hall, room 125.  Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.

For  more information about the class, contact the LCC Community Education Department by calling 721-5374 or go online to www.laredo.edu/ce.
