LCC Show Band goes 'salsa' with concerts

The Laredo Community College Show Band will spice things up this week during two special concerts, beginning with a lunchtime performance for LCC students, faculty and staff on Wednesday, November 12.  The LCC Show Band will also perform a concert on Sunday, November 16, 2004, at 3:00 P.M. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center.

Both programs are free and open to the public.   Artistic Director and Conductor for the LCC Show Band is José D. Compeán, who established the ensemble in the Fall of 1978.   Compeán is celebrating thirty-two years in Music Education.

The Show Band will perform its debut concert in the new, state-of-the-art Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center on the LCC campus.

“This glorious facility was long over due, but now that our students and the Laredo community have this wonderful crowned jewel to showcase performance art, all will benefit,” raved Compeán.

The theme for the concert is “SALSA MUSIC …A Tribute to the likes of Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Dizzy Gillespie and Joao Donato.”

“The men and women who comprise the LCC Show Band are talented and very dedicated to maintaining a high level of musical performance.   I am elated that I have the opportunity to work with such outstanding musically gifted students,” the conductor added.

The Show Band repertoire includes a selection from the Jazz-Rock-Salsa genre, Funky Cha Cha written by Cuban born trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.   The Show Band has also prepared music selections from our Salsa genre including pieces from Hispanic artists such as:  Tito Puente – GUAJIRA & PICADILLO, Mario Bauza - MAMBO INN, Mongo Santamaria - COME CANDELA, and Joao Donato - SABOR.    Dizzy Gillespie, noted Jazz Trumpeter, visited Cuba and was immediately influenced by the Latin rhythms.  Shortly after his returned to the states, Dizzy wrote MANTECA and NIGHT IN TUNISIA.   The LCC Ensemble will also perform SPAIN, a piece written by Jazz great, Chick Corea.

Members of the LCC Show Band include: Flute – Hacel Arias, Alto Sax - Cindy J. Jiménez, Guest artist and Alto & Tenor Sax - Joe D. Compeán, Tenor Sax -  Adam Hernandez, and Baritone Sax - Marco Maldonado.  Playing Trumpet is Gilbert Gomez (lead), Rafael Ramirez and José “Pepe” Compeán.

Playing trombone & Tuba is Eliborio Lopez, Jr.   Rhythm section includes: Daniel Garcia and Jesus Vasquez on Piano/ Keyboards, Carlos “Curly” Castillo on Drums, Jose Noe Aguilar playing Electric Guitar, and Albert Salazar playing electric bass.

The LCC Show Band will open for Little Joe Y La Familia’s “Back to School Concert,” in January of 2004.   The Jazz Ensemble has performed for such auspicious occasions as the grand opening ceremonies of the Laredo International Airport, Laredo Public Library and the LCC Sports Center.  Another notable performance occurred while the College celebrated its 50th anniversary. The Show Band has also represented the College during the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association’s Grand Parade.

Any student or community member needing more information about the concert or how to become a member, should contact  José D. Compeán at 721-5304 or e-mail him at jdc@laredo.edu.
