LCC health science students thank donors

This fall, more Laredo Community College students are realizing career aspirations in the health sciences thanks to the generosity of three philanthropists who have established endowed scholarships at LCC.

Sixteen nursing and allied health students who received scholarships at the beginning of the new academic year in August (2003-04) were given an opportunity to say “THANK YOU” to the donors of the scholarship endowments.

Based on the interest earned on the initial donations, the endowed scholarships are awarded annually to deserving students who express a financial need.

Representatives of the Vivian C. Battaglia family, Mercy Health Center Auxiliary and the Women’s City Club were present for the donor recognition.

Additionally, leaders of the Mercy Auxiliary presented a new gift of $15,000 to increase the total contribution toward the endowed scholarship program to $100,000.

The group originally launched the endowment with a $65,000 gift presented to the college in April of 2002.  This June, the group contributed an additional $20,000, which helped LCC surpass the million-dollar mark of its total endowed scholarship programs.

“Laredo Community College is proud of achieving an impressive milestone in surpassing the million-dollar mark of its total endowed scholarship programs,” said LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina.  “Not too many community colleges can make the same statement, and for that, Laredo Community College is grateful to its scholarship donors for helping achieve this special accomplishment for the benefit of students.”

Recipients of the LCC-Mercy Health Center Auxiliary Endowed Scholarship are: Guadalupe Aime Medina, Alonzo G. Laurel, Melissa Martinez and Juan Gerardo Valenzuela.  This scholarship is open to allied health and vocational nursing students.   Medina is in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program and Laurel, Martinez, and Valenzuela are in the Radiologic Technology Program.  Each student was awarded $350 for a total of $1,400 in scholarships.

The Women’s City Club (WCC) and Vivian C. Battaglia scholarships are dedicated to students enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program.

WCC scholarship recipients include Irene Diaz, Maria N. Avila, Sylvia Ramirez and Ruben Fuentes.  The students each received $300 for a total of $1,200.  The Women’s City Club endowment was established in October 2001.  In addition to nursing students, the non-profit organization has made an impact in the lives of LCC students pursuing careers ranging from music and dance to environmental science.

The eight students who received the Battaglia Scholarship are: Wendy Suarez, Esmeralda San Miguel, Denise Silva, Melanie Evans, Elsa Dominguez, Silvia Avila, Chad Johnson and Evangelina Guerra.  Each nursing student received a $500 scholarship for a combined total of $4,000.  The Battaglia endowment at LCC was established in 1993 upon the death of Ms. Battaglia with a gift from family members and a partial matching gift from the Arco Foundation in Los Angeles.  Battaglia was a registered nurse with 42 years of service at Mercy Hospital.
