LCC Upward Bound registers for college prep program

High school students can ACHIEVE MORE by joining the Upward Bound Program at Laredo Community College.  High school freshmen, sophomores and juniors are invited to register for the federally funded college prep program during special registration dates, beginning Monday, September 1.

The Upward Bound Program is geared for students who are interested in improving their academic skills and who plan to pursue a college education.

Registration will be held at the Lerma-Pena Learning Center, room 120, from September 1 to 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, September 6, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.  The year-long program begins in September.

Upward Bound is specifically designed for students whose parents do not hold a four-year bachelor’s degree and are college-bound or meet limited income guidelines.

The program’s objectives are to improve students’ high school grade point average, raise their self-esteem, increase standardized test scores, provide assistance in applying for admission to a college, and assist in applying for financial aid and college scholarships.

At least one parent must accompany the student during registration.  Applicants should bring their birth certificate, social security card, parents’ 1040 income tax forms, a utility bill, and most recent report card.

Upward Bound is open to LISD and UISD high school students. Students who are interested in joining Upward Bound are encouraged to apply immediately since enrollment is limited.

For more information, contact Upward Bound Director Gerardo Martinez at 721-5238 or 721-5240.
