LCC boosts healthcare with more nurses

The city will benefit from a significant boost to its healthcare system as Laredo Community College honored 11 graduates from its Vocational Nursing (VN) Program on Thursday, December 4.

LCC hosted a traditional pinning ceremony on December 4 in the de la Garza Building, room 101, to recognize students who met the educational requirements to receive the one-year VN degree.

The Fall 2003 graduates of the VN program are Eva M. Castillo, Jeannie Cooper, Arcenio D. Coreas, Elva M. Gomez, Veronica Gonzalez, Zenaida Lopez, Elsa L. Martinez, Diana L. Peņa, Mauricio A. Rayo, Mario A. Ruiz and Fabian Santamaria.

The student speaker was Jeannie Cooper.  Master of Ceremonies was Mike Peņa, VN Program Coordinator and Nursing Instructor.  A highlight of the nursing ceremony was the presentation of two special student awards.  The Mary Alice Lopez Award was given to Elva N. Gomez and the Merit Award was given to Diana L. Peņa.

The Vocational Nursing Program at LCC is a clinically-intensive one-year certificate program which offers classroom instruction and valuable clinical practice in four basic areas of nursing, including fundamentals, medical/surgical, maternity/pediatric and psychiatric.  Upon graduation, the vocational nursing student is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

The LCC nursing program is fully accredited by the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.  The application period for Spring 2005 admission to the nursing program is in progress through September 2, 2004.  For more information, call 721-5255.
