International trade in Laredo will benefit from an alliance created by Laredo Community College and the Association of Laredo Forwarding Agents, Inc. (ALFA).
Leaders of the community college and the professional association signed a Memorandum of Strategic Alliance on June 24 at the Laredo Country Club.
Under the alliance, LCC and ALFA will work together to support and promote training initiatives, as well as to promote college coursework and educational opportunities to ALFA members and other entities that deal with international trade operations.
Additionally, ALFA members will be encouraged to participate in joint trainings, workshops and conferences with LCC, coordinate needed research to enhance the city’s international trade industry, and examine innovative strategies that may help ALFA and LCC sustain and improve workforce skills development for the industry.
The alliance also will help to search for federal and state funding sources to boost workforce training for the benefit of the international trade sector.
ALFA is dedicated to promote local industry at the national and international levels. It also is responsible for representing public and private industry related to international commerce and transportation. ALFA is one of only three entities authorized to deliver Shipper Export Declarations for forwarding agencies in the United States.
LCC, via its Continuing Education Department, can develop training programs for the international trade industry, including import/export operations, supply chain and distribution, materials handling, freight forwarding and custom house brokerage operations.
For more information on training opportunities, call the Continuing Education Department at 721-5374.
