Three LCC Music Standouts Receive Highly Coveted

All-State Band Honors

The Laredo Community College Music and Dance Department is proud to announce the selection of three outstanding music students to the Texas Community College All-State Band.  Representing Laredo in the 2005 All-State Band are Hacel Arias, flute; Marco A. Maldonado, baritone saxophone; and Nancy Reyes, trumpet.

“Laredo Community College is proud of our music students for attaining such a high level of proficiency as musicians.  I am extremely proud of their accomplishments.   They are a credit to their families, the college and the Laredo community,” says José D. Compeán, LCC music instructor and Showband director.

Hacel Arias is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francisco Arias and is a second-year music major.  This is her second time to be selected to the Texas Community College All-State Band.  Arias is a member of Phi Theta Kappa (International Honor Society for two year colleges.)  After completing her classes at LCC, she plans to pursue a music education degree and minor in flute performance at a university.  She is a 2002 graduate of United High School.

Marco A. Maldonado is the son of Agustin and Laura Maldonado and is a sophomore music major.   Maldonado has achieved All-State status for two consecutive years.

He is a 2003 graduate of J.B. Alexander High School.    He plans to pursue a degree in Music Education at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.

Nancy Reyes, a music major, is the daughter of Raymundo and Nancy Reyes.  Her plans are to obtain a bachelor’s degree in music education with a minor in trumpet performance from the University of Texas at Austin.   She is a graduate of United High School.

The three LCC music students, under the tutelage of Compean, competed with music students from 30 community colleges in Texas.   They were vying for the opportunity to perform with the highly acclaimed Texas Community College All-State Band.  The competition was sanctioned by the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA).

Compean says that the LCC All-State musicians look forward to participate in the TMEA All-State Band Clinic and Convention February 9-12 in San Antonio.  They will participate in band rehearsals conducted by John Stansberry, Director of Bands at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.  Conducting the Texas Community College All-State Jazz Ensemble is Neil Slater, Director of the University of North Texas’ One o’clock Lab Band.  Other outstanding groups performing during the conference include: the wind ensembles of The University of Texas and the University of North Texas.  The famed One o’clock Lab Band will also perform.   Professional musicians, such as saxophonist Eric Marienthal, and acclaimed drummers Ed Shaughnessy and Peter Erskine will present workshops and concerts.

The convention features more than 200 clinics and workshops on pedagogy and rehearsal techniques taught by leading educators from across the nation.  Students will also able to learn more about computer-based music programs.

The LCC musicians are scheduled to perform in a special concert with the Texas Community College All-State Band during the TMEA convention.
