LCC hosts Student Awards Night

Scholarships, totaling over $264,000 and certificates of recognition were given to hundreds of new, returning and transferring Laredo Community College students during the annual LCC Student Awards Night on Tuesday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kazen College Center on the Main campus.

Family and friends of the student recipients, as well as donors, were nvited to attend the ceremony.  Music was provided by LCC piano instructor Dr. Susan Liu.  Dr. Juan Maldonado, vice-president for instruction and student development, served as director of ceremonies.  LCC President Dr. Ramon Dovalina welcomed honorees and guests to the event.

Community Relations Director Millie Slaughter said this year's event highlights another high increase in scholarships disbursed to LCC students.

“Laredo Community College appreciates the generosity of our Laredo regional community in their efforts to help students reach their educational goals and succeed in life,” Slaughter said.

In addition to the $264,000 that were given at Awards Night, LCC also plans to award a grand total of over $600,000 through private donations and early enrollment for high school students. That does not include federal and state financial aid disbursed to students attending LCC.  Approximately 85 to 90 percent of LCC students receive some type of financial aid.

Among the new scholarships established this year are the Cindy Alvarez Memorial Scholarship, the Ghern Johnson and Juanita Harvey McGraw Endowed Scholarship, the Kazen, Meurer, & Perez LLP Scholarship, the Matias de Llano Endowed Scholarship and the Satterfield and Pontikes Scholarship.

Other event highlights included the presentation of several awards to recognize student achievement.  Among the honors was the “L” award, which recognizes students who have contributed to the success of one or more student organizations.  Students who were named to the directory, “Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges,” were also recognized.
