New grant to benefit Zapata students

 

 

A $250,000 federal grant is expected to deliver greater education and career opportunities to Zapata County residents.  The funds will be utilized for a shuttle service between Zapata and Laredo that will provide Zapata County residents with safe and reliable daily transportation to higher education institutions and jobs in Laredo.  The project received the support of numerous entities, including Zapata County Chamber of Commerce (ZCCC), Zapata County Independent School District, Zapata Economic Development Center, Laredo Community College and U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar.  On hand for the recent grant announcement held in Zapata are, from left, Texas Department of Transportation Engineer Albert Quintanilla, Zapata County Auditor Teo Garza, Zapata County Treasurer Romeo Salinas, ZCCC Executive Director Peggy Umphres, Zapata County Commissioners Joe Rathmell and Jose Vela, Congressman Cuellar, Zapata County Commissioners Angel Garza and Norberto Garza, LCC Board President Ramiro Martinez and LCC Chief Development Officer Blas Castaņeda.  The LCC District has been working closely with ZCISD on various initiatives to deliver greater access to higher education for the benefit of Zapata students.
