Laredo Community College students and the community will have an opportunity to catch a rising star: national campus entertainer Nini Camps in concert at both Laredo Community College campuses on Tuesday, April 5.
Sponsored by the LCC Student Activities office, Camps will perform on April 5 at 10 a.m. at LCC South’s Billy Hall Student Center, and again at 1 p.m. in the Kazen College Center at the Main campus. Admission to both performances is free and open to students and the public.
Music lovers may recognize some tracks from Camps’ debut CD, Lovepie, which have appeared in the independent film Motorcycle Diaries and the WB hit TV series Felicity, The Mary Kate and Ashley Show and MTV’s Real World. In addition, the Olsen twins have licensed songs from Lovepie and her second full-length studio recording, So Long, for their TV show soundtrack and their most recent film The Challenge.
Camps, a first generation Cuban, was born and raised in Miami; she currently resides in New York City.
Camps is currently promoting her second independent CD, So Long, on Lovepie Music. To produce this full-length studio recording, Camps teamed up with David Seitz and an impressive array of New York City’s finest musicians, including Steve Hass of Manhattan Transfer and Horacio Hernandez of Santana, among others.
Critics describe Camps’ music style as a unique sound that “goes beyond the conventions of today’s popular music. It fearlessly blurs the lines of pop, country, folk and rock to create a sound that is as diverse as it is powerful.”
Noted writers, such as Lucinda Williams, have been major influences in Camps’ budding career. However, it is Camps’ ability to effortlessly tap into her Cuban heritage that has allowed her to mesh old traditions with new ones, and Cuban with American.
Camps has had the opportunity to share the stage with noted performing artists, including the Los Lonely Boys, Sophie B. Hawkins, The Waifs, and Joan Osborne at Madison Square Garden.
