Camp and a competitive tournament for young volleyball enthusiasts will help launch volleyball fever at Laredo Community College on July 29 and 30.
The LCC Palomino volleyball program will host a six-hour camp for elementary and middle school children who enjoy the sport on Friday, July 29 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Maravillo Gymnasium.
Palomino head coach Jennielle Strother will lead the camp, which is open to youngsters of all skills.
“Beginners who want to learn the sport and those who want to improve their skills are invited to be part of this exciting and fun volleyball camp,” Strother said.
Cost is $40 per camper. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch; however, a concession stand will be available.
The fever continues on Saturday, July 30 with the city’s first ever Volleyball Summer Slam. The tournament, originally billed as a two-day event for junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams from area high schools, has been re-formatted into a one-day tourney for varsity teams only.
“We encourage area teams to sign up soon, as space to compete in the tournament is filling quickly,” Strother noted.
The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. with pool-play action, followed by play-off competition.
“The Summer Slam falls the weekend prior to the high school teams’ two-a-day practice sessions. The kids usually are dying to start playing, so the LCC Summer Slam will give them a chance to get out there and play before practice starts,” Strother said.
Registration forms to compete in the tournament are available from Strother and at the Athletic Office in the Maravillo Gymnasium. The tournament fee is $100 per team. The tournament winner will be awarded a championship trophy.
General admission to watch the tournament is $1 for students with a valid school ID and $3 for adults. A concession and volleyball gear stand will be available.
