Noted international figure to speak in Laredo for LCC student benefit April 25
 

Cuauhtémoc Cardenas Solórzano, a noted civil engineer and leader in Mexico, will discuss current affairs across the border during a special presentation at Laredo Community College on Monday, April 25. 

Cardenas will speak to area business and community leaders at a noon scholarship fundraiser at La Posada Hotel. 

His lecture, entitled “A Vision for Mexico in the 21st Century,” will focus on economic development, social prosperity and other issues related to the future of Mexico and its close ties to the United States. 

Group and individual seating for the lunch, hosted by the LCC Phi Theta Kappa and Honors Program, is available by calling the LCC Community Relations Department at 721-5812. 

“Laredo Community College is pleased that Cuauhtémoc Cardenas Solórzano has graciously accepted an opportunity to share his insight on a subject that is highly important to our binational region, while at the same time supporting an endeavor that will create new scholarship opportunities for students to advance their lives,” LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina said. 

Dovalina added that Cardenas has accepted a special invitation to address students, faculty and staff from LCC, TAMIU and area schools at a distinguished speaker presentation on April 25 at 6 p.m. at the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.  Students will have an opportunity to submit questions for discussion a half-hour prior to the presentation.  For more information about the distinguished speaker presentation, call 721-5812. 

Cardenas attended the National School of Engineering of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) where he obtained the title of civil engineer in 1957.  Today, he serves as an instructor of engineering at UNAM.

Cardenas was selected a scholar for the Department of Foreign Affairs in France from 1957 to 1958.  He worked on projects dealing with urban, regional and hydroelectric development.  In 1958, he also conducted technical visits of metallurgical industries in Germany and assisted in regional development projects in Italy. 

Cardenas has been involved in numerous professional and technical activities related to his profession.  This includes his involvement as president of the Mexican Society of Planning (1962-1964) and a five-year commission to serve as resident engineer of the Rio Balsas dam (Jose Maria Morelos) in 1964.  He was also involved with the Inter-American Society of Planning in Puerto Rico, Columbia and Mexico City.

Beginning in the 1960s to the present, Cardenas has led an active role in Mexican politics.  He has held the positions of senator and governor for the state of Michoacan and has served as a Mexican presidential candidate for the Frente Democratico Nacional in 1987, and the Partido de la Revolucion Democratica (PRD) in 1993 and 1999.  Cardenas also served a two-year term as mayor of Mexico City in 1997.

Presently, Cardenas is president of the Fundacion para la democracia-alternativa y debate-A.C., and vice-president of the Internacional Socialista
