A new year brings the opportunity to start new beginnings. The Continuing Education Department at Laredo Community College is offering a smart alternative to a great start in 2005.
LCC’s Continuing Education Department is offering various lifelong learning options to launch a fast and alternative pathway for adults to acquire the skills needed to get a job or to get ahead in life, says new department director Steven Mon Dragon.
“The LCC Continuing Education Department is offering many exciting initiatives in the new year for the benefit of persons seeking access to quality career skills training or personal enrichment,” said Mon Dragon. “Most courses are short term, and available days, evenings and weekends to better accommodate students.”
One of the initiatives that the Continuing Education Department is launching will benefit students near and far- online computer classes. LCC will offer various online sections of an introductory course in Microsoft Excel.
Students
will learn various aspects of this electronic spreadsheet program, including
terminology, program parameters, display characteristics, formatting,
mathematical functions and printing. Participants will be able to study from
any computer with internet access and a version of the Excel program.
During the duration of the 10-day online course, students will be able to work on their assignments 24 hours of the day, community with the instructor via e-mail and participate in special classroom chat sessions. Beatriz Gutierrez, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems and Mathematics, will teach the online course.
Other exciting training endeavors are geared for adults seeking to start or enhance their businesses.
Among the offerings is a 22-day course on Personnel Management, which offers a comprehensive approach for businesses to improve their human resources department. The course will guide the participant to understand and prepare for key aspects of human resources, including employee and labor relations, compensation and benefits, personnel development, health, safety, security and much more.
Also available are courses that will provide the vital steps to establishing a business traditionally or on the World Wide Web.
The course Starting Your Own Business, will show participants how to start setting up their business. Students will be guided though critical decisions on opening a new business, financing and legal structures.
Starting a Successful E-Business will teach participants how to create and manage an e-commerce business. Topics include the internet, infrastructure for e-commerce, markup languages, web-based tools and software, security issues, electronic payment systems, and strategies for maketing, sales and purchasing, among other issues.
Other courses include basic keyboarding, a “computer crash” course, CPR, creating high-impact presentations, effective English communication for the workplace, warehouse and distribution center management, QuickBooks, sign language, and customer relations.
The LCC Continuing Education Department will also offer courses for the substitute teacher, electrician re-certification, private security officer certificate (Level III), and food manager’s certification and re-certification in English and Spanish.
Mon Dragon noted that some of the courses will be offered at the LCC South campus for the benefit of the community, South Laredo and neighboring communities.
