LCC offers connection to college life

College life can be intimidating for first-time students, but a unique orientation program at Laredo Community College is available to help lessen those college freshmen jitters by connecting students with the resources and knowledge needed for student success.

LCC will host three sessions of the College Connection, a new-student orientation program on June 28 and June 29 at the LCC Main campus, and on June 30 at LCC South.  Space is available to join the June 29 and June 30 sessions; each meets from 2-5 p.m.  Participation is free and open to first-time college students and those with less than six college hours.

A total of about 500 college freshmen are expected to participate in the College Connection, Lisa Gonzalez, counselor and event coordinator, said.

“The College Connection is an annual orientation program for new students to learn how college works,” Gonzalez said.  “Our College Connection staff is looking forward to greeting students at both campuses and getting them connected to college life.”

Gonzalez said that the orientation will begin with a presentation offering advice and recommendations on how to succeed in college.  Time management, class schedules, grade point averages, college credit hours and other related topics will be discussed.

College Connection also will offer students an opportunity to get acquainted with LCC’s On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system and to be the first to register early for the Fall 2005 semester.

“Counselors and faculty will be available to offer academic and career advising, and college staff will be ready to assist students with the OLÉ system to register early for classes,” Gonzalez said.

Additionally, students will be treated to some refreshments and will have an opportunity to win a $500 scholarship courtesy of Wachovia, a financial service company.

To participate in the College Connection at LCC, students must complete the easy admission and assessment process.  For more information, call the LCC Counseling Center at 721-5135 or 794-4135 at LCC South.

Applications for admission to LCC are available at the Admissions/Registration Office, located in Memorial Hall, room 125, and Billy Hall Student Center, room 113, at LCC South.

To take the assessment exam, call 721-5418 or 794-4418, or visit the LCC Assessment Center at Memorial Hall, room 130 or Billy Hall Student Center, room 245. The assessment exam is a valuable guide for new students to map out their road to a college education by determining their strengths and weaknesses in reading, English and mathematics. The assessment exam is free of charge to students.
