LCC Culturas Concert promotes unique cultures

The rhythmic beats of Spanish gypsy music mesh with the traditional worship dances of the Mayan gods when Laredo Community College presents a cultural extravaganza of music and dance during the 2005 Culturas Concert on Sunday, May 1.

Sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department in association with the City of Laredo, the cultural extravaganza begins at 3 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.  Admission is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature exciting performances by LCC’s Ballet Folklórico and Flamenco Dance Company.  Student dancers from the Vidal M. Treviño Magnet School’s Folklórico-Flamenco also will participate.  The three dance ensembles are directed by Alicia McKinnis, who teaches dance at both LCC and VMT.

Other performance ensembles include the LCC Mariachi Palomino, Ruben Vargas, director; VMT Mariachi de Oro, Alejandra Rodriguez, director; VMT International Guitar Ensemble, Nino Palacios, director; and Ballet Andaluz, Rey Duran, director.

The concert will offer a culturally-eclectic musical experience for the senses, ranging from the traditional and contemporary styles of flamenco to the unique cultures of various Mexican states.

The period of the revolucion Mexicana (Mexican revolution) will also be brought to life through dance.  McKinnis said that this period in time “was romantic, colorful and creative, despite the massive bloodshed.”

“It created the soldaderas, brave women who marched, cooked and fought alongside their men.  All kinds of songs were produced for this particular period,” McKinnis explained.

More than 100 student dancers and musicians will be featured in the Culturas Concert.

“This is a major concert involving the combined forces of Laredo Community College and the Vidal M. Trevino Magnet School.  We invite the community to spend an afternoon enjoying quality entertainment in a family-friendly atmosphere,” McKinnis added.

Gregorio Garza Jr. will be the master of ceremonies.

LCC's Culturas concert is on Sunday, May 1, at 3 p.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.
