Latin dances in spotlight at LCC on Thursday

A colorful showcase of dances from Mexico, Spain and other Latin American cultures will be celebrated at Laredo Community College in a special dance concert/benefit on Thursday, Dec. 1.

LCC, in collaboration with the Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts, will host the first Danzas Hispanas (Hispanic Dances) Concert, featuring an array of high school and college dance and music performance ensembles.

The event, a fund-raiser for student scholarships, begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center theater.  Admission is $5 per person with proceeds benefiting the educational endeavors of dance students at LCC.

LCC adjunct dance instructor Alicia McKinnis, event coordinator and choreographer for most of the dance troupes, is excited to organize this major dance festival.

Popular dances from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Argentina, Cuba and much more—will be featured.

“Laredo Community College is excited to be working collaboratively with the VMT Magnet School to present a first-rate cultural extravaganza of dance, while raising scholarship funds to help college students make their dreams in the performing arts a reality,” McKinnis said.

The concert will feature dance performances by the LCC Ballet Folklorico, the LCC Flamenco Company and the VMT Ballet Folklorico-Flamenco—all directed by McKinnis.

The LCC Dance Theatre, under the direction of Danuta U. Gazdyszyn, also will perform.

Additionally, some of the musical arrangements for the dance performances will be performed live by the VMT Combo of director Robert Lopez and the VMT Ovation Brass of director John Reimund.

McKinnis said that the dance concert will feature 22 performances highlighting many dance styles, some of which are unique to the region.

“The concert will feature many recognizable dance forms, such as the pasodoble, the rumba, and flamenco nuevo,” McKinnis said.  “But it also will feature dances not common to this region, including the cha-cha and the zoot suit.”

Tickets will be sold at the door beginning at 6:30 p.m.

For more information, call the LCC Music and Dance Department at 721-5330.

From the cha-cha to the zoot suit, the first Danzas Hispanas dance concert at Laredo Community College will cover an array of dances from Latin America.  The scholarship fund-raiser is on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Martinez Fine Arts Center theater at the main campus.
