Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina, president of Laredo Community College, is a distinguished recipient of the 2005 Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction.
Dovalina received the prestigious award during the International Convention of Phi Theta Kappa, held recently in Dallas. The presentation session featured former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani as speaker.
Among the students and faculty representing LCC at the international convention were Phi Theta Kappa-Theta Theta members Priscilla Pantoja Martinez, Jennifer Widrig, Jeremy O. Gonzalez, Stephen R. Soliz and Co-Senior Advisor Jose D. Compean.
Dovalina is among a select group to receive this year’s honor, which recognizes college presidents and chief executive officers who have demonstrated exceptional support for the advancement of their local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society comprised of academically gifted students enrolled in two-year community/junior/technical colleges.
The honor is the highest presented by Phi Theta Kappa to college presidents, campus chief executive officers and state community college directors. The award is named after Dr. Shirley B. Gordon, chairman of the Phi Theta Kappa Board of Directors and president emeritus of Highline Community College in Washington.
The LCC president is credited for demonstrating tremendous support for the Theta Theta Chapter during his nine-year tenure at the college.
Dovalina encourages fellowship among the group by hosting receptions for Phi Theta Kappa students and their families. He also supports student leadership by encouraging chapter members to participate in the college’s Board of Trustees meetings, and host special activities and community benefits.
Professional development for Phi Theta Kappa officers and advisors also is strongly encouraged by Dovalina. The LCC Phi Theta Kappa chapter has attended district, regional and international meetings.
Dovalina is actively involved in numerous Phi Theta Kappa functions and initiatives, including induction ceremonies, the All-USA and All-State Academic Teams, the Satellite Seminar Series and Project Graduation.
Dovalina has been closely associated with Phi Theta Kappa for many years. Prior to becoming LCC president, Dovalina was the founding Phi Theta Kappa advisor for the Austin Community College chapter. He is an honorary member of the Theta Theta Chapter.
