Amid the myriad of advancements and changes that Laredo Community College has experienced in its 57 year history, one thing remains the same—a steadfast commitment to provide students with quality instruction delivered by caring faculty.
The faculty members who are committed to their profession are the major reason for LCC’s success, emphasizes college president Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina.
Dovalina speaks from experience. He recalls the impact his teachers had when he was a Laredo Junior College student in the 1960s.
“Educators such as Mildred Reyna, Sabino Salazar, Mercurio Martinez, Jr., Elpha Lee West, Edith Toombs, Lydia Linares, Bertha Treviño and Stanley Kielsen are just some of the individuals that left a lasting impression in my life and in the lives of my classmates during the 1960s at LJC,” explains Dovalina. “I received a great start and there are many fond memories of my days at LJC, which I still hold dear to my heart.”
From LJC student to LCC president, Dovalina can easily point out how Laredo’s hometown college has evolved throughout the decades.
“Laredo Community College has experienced many changes since 1947 when it opened its doors. Some of the wooden structures have been replaced with modern brick buildings, our infrastructure has been greatly enhanced, student enrollments have grown tremendously, new programs of study continue to be added, emerging technology continues to revolutionize the learning process and LCC has grown into a two-campus college district,” says Dr. Dovalina.
He adds that while many of the faculty from his days as an LJC student have retired from their professions, LCC has been fortunate to recruit instructors with the similar talents and passions to help maintain a high level of quality instruction for the benefit of students. Dovalina went on to name a small sample of the hundreds of instructors that teach at LCC.
“From our long-time instructors—such as Manuel Blanco, Dennis and Kay Kriewald, Dr. Sara Carrasco, Nora Blinn, Dr. Fernando Prince, Arturo Navarro, Oscar Gomez, Angelica Garcia, Rafael Hernandez, Rosalinda Herrera, Danuta Gazdyszyn, and John Perez—to our faculty newcomers, such as Dr. Susan Liu, Joe Ruiz, Ana Click, Elizabeth Valle, Dr. Tim Koneval, Linda Villarreal, Gil Martinez, Leigh-Anne Williams and Annie Gonzalez—students can count on receiving a great education at Laredo Community College.
Dovalina adds retired and former LCC instructors continue to make important contributions to the community, such as environmental activist Dr. Jim Earhart and computer businessman Patrick Wong.
“Laredo Community College is committed to providing students with a quality and accessible education. We are fortunate to be able to deliver a college education with tuition at least half that of most state universities and led by a team of gifted educators who truly care about student success,” Dovalina added.
