With 21 years of experience, comic Chris Fonseca could easily be considered a legend of stand-up comedy.
But Fonseca doesn’t let it go to his head. He smiles and then chuckles.
“Legend?
How do I keep my cape from getting caught in my wheelchair?” Fonseca deadpans.
The wheelchair is part of the equation of the unique and successful career 41-year-old Fonseca has built in comedy throughout the last two decades.
Fonseca will present his comedy show at Laredo Community College South on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 12 p.m. in the Billy Hall Student Center. He offered a similar show on Monday in the Kazen College Center at the main campus.
Admission is free and open to students and the public. The show is sponsored by the LCC Student Activities Office.
Fonseca was born with cerebral palsy and then was involved in some car accidents that led to his confinement in a wheelchair. But he has prevailed and looks forward to the future with excitement.
Popular with college students nationwide, Fonseca has been showcased consistently in conferences of the National Association of Campus Activities.
In 2003, Fonseca shared the stage with Latin singers Jose Feliciano and Jon Secada at a benefit for the Latin American Educational Foundation in Denver. A Colorado native, Fonseca said he was proud to help an initiative that raised $1 million in scholarships funds.
The Mexican-American was most recently featured in the Latino Laugh Festival in a cable network channel. He also has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, HBO’s Loco Slam, PBS’s Look Who’s Laughing and ABC’s 9th annual American Comedy Awards. He also took a jab at acting in an episode of the hit show, “Baywatch.”
Fonseca has released two CDs, including 1997’s “Not tonight, I have cerebral palsy,” and 2001’s “Get in the Van.” A follow-up is in the works.
His autobiography, “Daddy, where do jokes come from?,” is scheduled to be completed by this summer. The book offers an insight to Fonseca’s life and it is dedicated to the most important people in his life—his five children.
Fonseca also has started a series of stand-up comedy concerts, titled “Fonseca and Friends.” The show features a mix of comics whom he has befriended, both veteran and aspiring comics.
