Friends of the environment have a unique opportunity to party with a wild flair and support the advancement of the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center at Laredo Community College during the Gator Aid IV dinner benefit on Friday, April 15.
Tickets are now on sale for the fund-raiser, which will offer dinner and music beginning at 7 p.m. on the grounds of the LBVE Science Center, located on the north side of the LCC Main campus.
The donation is $35 per person. The event will include an evening of quality entertainment, a catered prime rib dinner, a tour of new exhibits completed in the past year, and a special dedication ceremony.
Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 764-5701 or 721-5812.
Proceeds from the benefit will aid the growing gator family and other native specimens housed at the center.
“The community is invited to celebrate the science center’s sixth anniversary and help us raise monies to finance and sponsor new exhibits, and animal maintenance for the following year,” LBVESC director Tom Miller said.
Located on the north side of the LCC campus in close proximity to the Rio Grande, the science center serves as a living laboratory for LCC students.
It also has become an important center for science education for the region’s students from pre kindergarten to 12th grade.
“At this time, over 70,000 students have visited the science center for it to become Laredo’s premier field trip destination. The support we receive from Gator Aid allows the center to continue its operations and grow,” Miller explained.
Through its educational curriculum and hands-on approach, the center promotes an understanding and respect for the relationship between man and environment.
The center features hands-on demonstrations, water areas for live specimens native to the Rio Grande ecosystem, growing areas for native vegetation, wildlife diorama displays, a wetlands demonstration project and the adjacent Paso del Indio Nature Trail, located along the Rio Grande river banks.

The community has an opportunity to support the American alligator and other critters who reside at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center by attending Gator Aid IV at Laredo Community College on April 15. Tickets for the dinner benefit are $35 and can be purchased by calling 764-5701.
