‘Guys and Dolls’ auditions Monday at LCC

High school and college students are invited to a second round of auditions on Monday, Nov. 14 for singing, non-singing and dancing roles in the Laredo Community College Opera Workshop production of the Broadway classic musical “Guys and Dolls.”

Auditions for the spring 2006 production will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center, room 102, on the LCC main campus.

The musical, written by Frank Loesser, is about gangsters and crusaders, relationships and gambling.  The show includes a variety of escapades including a brawl in Havana, showgirl numbers, gangsters nearly caught as they run out of a mission, a roll of the dice for the souls of the players and a rousing midnight prayer meeting.

The complications work themselves out in a not-so-perfect but still happy ending.

Riding high on the recent success of the fall 2005 production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” Opera Workshop director Dr. Joseph Crabtree said that “Guys and Dolls” will offer a greater delight for Laredo audiences.

“The Opera Workshop chose ‘Guys and Dolls’ to raise the bar in terms of audience expectations,” Crabtree said.  “We wanted to do a combined musical and dance show with many dance numbers to feature the college’s Dance Theatre troupe under the direction of LCC dance instructor Danuta Gazdyszyn.

“This allows us to include more cast members and get more choreography in the show.”

Crabtree was able to fill some roles during the first set of auditions last week.  He hopes to fill the remaining vacancies during the next audition session on Monday.

“This show, as it is more mature in its storyline, does not require young children, and those auditioning should be juniors or seniors in high school or older,” Crabtree said.

He added that all who wish to apply are encouraged to give it a try.  Scholarships are available to students who need financial assistance to enroll in the Opera Workshop course.

“The leads have to sing and must be able to move, though no formal dance training is required.  There are numerous smaller parts, and the chorus has many roles to fill,” Crabtree said.
