In high school, students can ask for a hall pass.
At Laredo Community College, students can ask for a pass to a successful future with IPASS.
Beginning Monday, Sept. 26 LCC students will be able to take advantage of the Instructors Promoting Academic Student Success program, or IPASS, a unique tutoring initiative led by LCC faculty and administrative staff with degrees, specialties or expertise in all instructional areas.
Providing instructional assistance outside of the classroom is a top priority at LCC, Phil Worley, assistant dean of instructional support services, said.
For years, students have benefited from the peer-to-peer and computer-assisted tutoring services offered at LCC.
Now, students stand to benefit more with IPASS, Worley said.
“The implementation of the IPASS program will greatly enhance the existing tutoring services available to Laredo Community College students in the learning centers at both main and south campuses,” Worley said.
To launch the program, Worley had projected to recruit a group of 40 individuals to volunteer one hour a week to help students with questions in their field of study.
He received overwhelming support from 80 volunteers.
“It’s gratifying to know that we have a corps of caring and talented instructors and staff who are committed to helping students succeed and realize their educational goals,” Worley said.
With IPASS, LCC students will be able to get assistance with their classes, whether completing an assignment, preparing for a test, working math problems or writing an essay or research paper.
IPASS is available to any full-time or part-time student at either campus with a valid LCC ID card.
Tutors are available during the day and in the evenings for the benefit and convenience of students. For a complete IPASS tutoring schedule, go online to www.laredo.edu, and click on the IPASS icon.
Among the subjects covered by IPASS are English, reading, chemistry, psychology, math, nursing, social work, history, computer information systems, child development, criminal justice, speech and many more.
Students can sign up for the IPASS tutoring service by visiting the learning center at the Lerma-Peña Learning Center, room 123, on the main campus, or the facilities in the Senator Judith Zaffirini Library, room 206, at LCC South.
For more information, call the learning center at 721-5230 at main campus or 794-4342 at the south campus.
