Laredo can now lay its claim to have a female Intercollegiate Tennis Association champion thanks to Clelia Melena, a first-year member of the Laredo Community College Palomino women’s tennis team. Melena won the title during the ITA Regional Tournament in Plano at Collin County Community College, Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Also winning at this year’s tournament were sophomores Daniel Pazos and Henry Estrella, both whom won the top seed in doubles. Others who reached the finals before losing were the doubles of Melena and Cristel Antonioli, both natives of Switzerland. Estrella also reached the finals in singles before losing to Tomas Virdhage of Collin County. The LCC tennis team players displaying their awards are, from left, Estrella, Pazos, Antonioli, Melena and head coach Jaime Donjuan. The quartet advance to the Small College Bowl on Oct. 12-16 at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla. Last year’s ITA men’s tennis champion, Palomino Alex Gonzalez of Spain, did not play in this year’s event due to a knee injury.
