Laredo Community College students will have an opportunity to add some spice to their lunch hour at a jazz music concert on Wednesday, January 26, at 1 p.m. in the Kazen College Center.
Sponsored by the LCC Music and Dance Department and the Student Activities Office, the concert is free and open to the campus body and public.
LCC music instructor Ruben Vargas and friends, a local group of professional musicians, will present the concert in the Kazen Center. The group will also play for students and guests at the LCC South campus at 10 a.m. in the Billy Hall Student Center.
Vargas, who directs the college’s mariachi and traditional music ensembles, also shares a passion for jazz music.
Vargas and company made their debut on campus during a Christmas luncheon for college employees.
“The concert was such a hit with faculty and staff that the Student Activities Office decided it would be a special treat to showcase this talented jazz ensemble to our student body,” said Student Activities Director Priscilla Medina.
Vargas, who plays the saxophone and flute with the jazz group, said that their repertoire will include various styles of jazz, including bebop, ballads and swing.
“Students and jazz lovers can expect to hear timeless classics such as My Favorite Things, Take Five, and My Funny Valentine,” said Vargas.
