Summer fun, learning activities grow at LCC

Area children and teens have enjoyed the fun and excitement of several educational and recreational activities at Laredo Community College; but now they have one more reason to spend their summer at LCC.

Kids and Teens College, a three-week summer learning enrichment program, will be in session from July 11-28.

Registration starts soon for parents to reserve a spot for their children in the summer program.  For more information, call the LCC Continuing Education Department at 721-5374 or email ce@laredo.edu.

The program is tailored similar to college, allowing kids the chance to create a class schedule to their liking.

The program will consist of courses in math, reading, writing, science, swimming, arts and crafts.  All classes will be taught by certified instructors with years of experience.  The course fees vary from $35 to $65.

Exciting camps for children and teens also are available this summer, courtesy of the Kinesiology Department, the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center, the Camilo Prada Child Development Center and the Laredo Children’s Museum.

The second session of basketball and indoor arena soccer day camps in the Maravillo Gym run from June 13-23.  Space is still available to join these camps, and an additional camp in softball is set to start June 20.  For camp fees and more information, call the LCC Kinesiology Department at 721-5858 or 721-5329.

Over at the LBVE Science Center, space is still available for ages 9-11 to attend camp June 20-24.  Also open are camp sessions on June 27-July 1 for ages 6-8,  July 11-15  for ages  9-11,  July 18-22  for  ages 6-8, and an advanced camp for ages 12-14 from July 25-29.  For camp fees and more details, call the LBVESC at 764-5701.

The Prada Child Development Center at LCC South will host two camps, which will be from Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-12 p.m.  The first session is June 13-24 and the second session from July 1-15.  Activities will focus on literature, movement, science, math and art.  The camps, for ages 3 to 5, include breakfast and lunch.  The camp fee for each two-week session is $100.  Campers will receive a gift bag at the end of each camp session.  For more information, call 794-4561.

Summer camps, hosted by the Children's Museum on the main campus, will be offered now through July 22 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.  The camps will focus on the Mayan culture and on inventions based on basic physics concepts.  The fee to attend camp for one week is $60 per camper/non-LCM member and $50 per camper/LCM member.  Lunch is included.          Early drop-off and late pick-up is available for an extra charge.  Parents may call 728-0404 to reserve a camp spot for their children.
