LPO tradition flourishes at LCC’s Fine Arts Center

The Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra has enjoyed a long and prosperous history as the community orchestra for the city of Laredo.
Today that tradition continues to thrive at its home in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center at Laredo Community College.
In 2003, Laredo Community College launched a new chapter in the rich history of its visual and performing arts programs with the $8.4 million fine arts center.
“Laredo Community College added color to its main campus with the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center, which serves as a new home for cultural study and performance,” LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina said.
The LCC fine arts center is providing state-of-the-art technology for students in visual and performing arts classes to master their skills and showcase their talents.
The creation of the fine arts center at LCC could not have come at a better time for the LPO.
A unique collaboration between the LPO, LCC and Texas A&M International University was established in 2002 to provide the orchestra with the necessary support to continue to thrive.
Under the agreement, music aficionados get to enjoy the sounds of the LPO in the elegant 752-seat auditorium of the LCC fine arts center. The orchestra’s annual performance calendar also includes appearances in the performing arts facilities at TAMIU.
The LCC auditorium is fully equipped with sophisticated stage lighting and audio equipment, as well as a full fly loft. Modern acoustical “clouds” dot the auditorium ceiling, providing for an enhanced auditory experience.
“The Martinez Fine Arts Center is indeed the most beautiful building on the main campus,” Dovalina said. “But, it is not as beautiful as what is taking place in this facility.
“This building stands as a monument to our culture. It is our community’s culture that makes us different as people and it is our expression of culture that binds us together as a human race.”
Dovalina said that the college’s partnership with the LPO adds beauty to Laredo’s cultural heritage.
