Busloads of nursing home residents from Aransas Pass seeking refuge from Hurricane Rita found a temporary home on Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Laredo Community College gymnasium, which was designated by the city of Laredo as a medical site for evacuees with medical needs.
“Laredo Community College’s nursing and allied health departments and other college department personnel actively assisted the first wave of evacuees, which arrived early morning on Thursday. Two additional busloads of nursing home residents arrived later that afternoon. The college was ready to receive up to 200 people,” LCC President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina said.
Dovalina added that the college received valuable support from businesses. La Posada Hotel donated soaps and shampoos, while Sam’s Club donated a variety of personal items, as well as magazines and other items for entertainment. The Bayshore Nursing Home residents left with a memento of LCC on Friday afternoon after the college bookstore donated clothing apparel with the college logo to all the residents. Dr. Dovalina was on hand to present the clothing items to the evacuees. The residents departed Laredo after receiving word that the voluntary evacuation orders had been lifted in Aransas Pass.
