Plenty of laughter, sweet sounds, graceful moves and much more can be enjoyed at the Guadalupe and Lilia Martinez Fine Arts Center at Laredo Community College.
Located on the north side of the main campus, the Martinez Fine Arts Center opened its doors in 2003 to serve as a new hub for cultural study and performance.
The center is serving its purpose in a grand way, said College President Dr. Ramon H. Dovalina.
“Students are learning in a quality facility and it also serves as an outstanding place to host culturally enriching performances,” Dovalina noted.
In past seasons, the stage of the Martinez Fine Arts Center has been graced with the presence of student talent of all ages, and professional performing artists, as well as distinguished speakers.
The fall 2005 season is no exception.
The curtain rises on Thursday, July 28 when LCC drama students present “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” in the Martinez Fine Arts Center theater. Additional show times are on July 29 and July 30; the program begins at 8 p.m.
Written by comic legend Steve Martin, the live theater production presents an unusual scenario: what would happen if science were to take on art as upstart young scientist Albert Einstein confronts an as-yet unknown Spanish painter Pablo Picasso in a nondescript Paris bistro in 1904? And in one final surprise, everyone is caught off guard by a young dark-haired singer from the future, who is oddly protective of his shoes.
Theater lovers will need to attend the student-led show, which is a special scholarship fund-raiser being done in memory of Floyd Reed, a well-liked drama instructor at LCC.
From live theater to the captivating sounds of the classic guitar, expect to be dazzled by international performing and recording artist Adam Holzman, who returns to the LCC fine arts center theater on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
Described by the New York Times as “polished and quite dazzling,” Holzman has won major international competitions. His recordings for the Naxos label have been critically acclaimed. Holzman is the founder of the guitar department at The University of Texas at Austin, where he heads a thriving guitar studio in addition to his active performing career.
Fans of big Broadway musicals will enjoy the LCC Opera Workshop performance of “Fiddler on the Roof.” The musical launches with a student show on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 9 a.m. in the fine arts center theater. Evening performances are scheduled for October 27, 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m.
“Fiddler on the Roof” is set in the small Jewish village of Anatevka, Russia in 1905 and is concerned primarily with the efforts of Tevye, a dairyman, his wife, Golde, and their five daughters to cope with their harsh existence under Tsarist rule. The touching musical has been a hit in Broadway and on the silver screen.
November offers an eclectic mix of the performing arts in the fine arts center. Modern dance and much more will be highlighted during the annual LCC Dance Concert on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. And the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra will present enchanting orchestral pieces on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m. as part of the group’s fall 2005 season.
