Adults with an interest in exploring America’s military force, from its early years to contemporary times, should consider enrolling in a course debuting this spring at Laredo Community College.
Registration for the course—HIST 2305, American Military History—is under way at LCC for new and current students. The course begins in January and is slated to be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 8:20 p.m. on the main campus.
The class was created to support the development of the college’s Military Science program for the benefit of LCC and Texas A&M International University students in the R.O.T.C. program.
Admission is open to all adults in the community who have an interest in the military.
The prerequisite of completing HIST 1301 and 1302 (U.S. History I and II) is waived for non-degree students interested in enrolling in the course for personal enrichment.
The college course will cover four major topics, including the development of the Citizen-Soldier ideal from early colonial America to the Civil War, changes in the American military system during the industrial revolution, America’s transformation into a superpower in the 20th century, and the relationship between society and the military.
Teaching
the class will be Kevin Bishop, a full-time instructor of history in the Social
and Behavioral Sciences Department at LCC, and a retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant
Commander.
He formerly taught naval history at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis and military history at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
“Students will learn how political, social and technological developments affect the military,” Bishop said. “The class will gain a broader understanding of how the nation uses the military to achieve its goals.”
Classroom activity will include discussions on military decision making and reviews of historical film, including Hollywood history vs. real history, Bishop said.
A 22-year veteran, Bishop enlisted in the Navy in 1977 and served in the Atlantic Fleet, during which he was deployed in support of the Iran hostage crisis.
“I served in the Pacific Ocean aboard cruisers, destroyers and frigates,” Bishop said. “My last shipboard job was as the operations officer of the missile cruiser, the U.S.S. Port Royal.”
Bishop was deployed numerous times to the western Pacific and the Middle East, and lived and worked in the Philippines and Korea.
In 2002, Bishop received the Shiner Award from the Air Force Academy for excellence in the teaching of military history.
Spring registration for the spring term at LCC continues online via the On Line Enrollment (OLÉ) system available at www.laredo.edu. Students may register from any computer with Internet access from home or on campus.
Students may register any time from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., including weekends.
